Amnesty International seeks release of El-Zakzaky as 45-day ultimatum expires

By Daily Nigerian -

January 15, 2017

The Amnesty International Nigeria has asked the Nigerian government to comply with the order of a Federal High Court by releasing the leader of Islamic Movement of Nigeria, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky.

The foremost rights campaigners said in a statement by spokesman Isa Sanusi, that the 45-day deadline given for their release expires today.

“The Nigerian authorities must immediately comply with a High Court order and release the leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) Ibraheem El-Zakzaky and his wife from detention,” said Amnesty International.

“El-Zakzaky, and his wife Malama Zeenah Ibraheem, have been in detention without charge for more than a year following a clash between his supporters and the Nigerian military in which soldiers slaughtered hundreds of men, women and children. The authorities claim he is being held in “protective custody.

The statement quoted Makmid Kamara, the Interim Director of Amnesty International Nigeria as saying “The 45 day deadline given for their release expires today. If the government deliberately disregards the orders of its own courts, it will demonstrate a flagrant – and dangerous – contempt for the rule of law.”

“El-Zakzaky is being unlawfully detained. This might be part of a wider effort to cover up the gruesome crimes committed by members of the security forces in Zaria in December 2015 that left hundreds dead,” Mr. Kamara said.

On 2 December 2016, the Federal High Court in Abuja ruled that El Zakzaky and Malama Zeenah Ibraheem should be released within 45 days. The court described their detention, which began in December 2015, as illegal and unconstitutional. The deadline for the court order expires on Monday January 16.

Amnesty International is also calling on the authorities to release other IMN supporters arrested at the same time as El Zakzaky and his wife, who likewise remain in detention without charge.

Background

According to Amnesty International’s research, more than 350 IMN members were killed by security forces between 12 and 14 December 2015 in Zaria, Kaduna State.

The IMN is a Shi’ite religious and political organization whose leader, Ibraheem Yaqub Al-Zakzaky, has been a proponent of Shi’a Islam in Nigeria since the 1980s.

Processions, demonstrations and other activities organized by the IMN, usually without obtaining the necessary permits and at times blocking public roads, have resulted in confrontation with the Nigerian authorities and strained relations with other communities.

Black man wake up!

Ask yourself why the white man only cares for the human rights of terrorist and militants in Africa, but they keep mute about demanding human rights of Palestinian and other insurgents they mistreat and lock up for decades.

Amnesty International is just another tool of the white man to destablise those African nations that they cannot allow to become to powerful - e.g. Nigeria.

A vision, so real, it seems a prophecy.
I saw them with knives, daggers, weapons of all kinds running in different directions, thirsty for blood
They would ask 'are you ours or not?' and as many as did not belong to their group, were hacked and killed with the weapons. There were bodies of the slain christians and others littered everywhere.
The buildings were not left out, they torched the buildings, shops, offices and houses of those who were not adherents of their religion. They approached me to ask the same question but I can not really say how I evaded them.
When they left, I saw a young lady in her early twenties crying, looking for where to run to. I helped her as she kept dodging them. It was as if I could read their moves.
We kept on running together with others joining us, as we kept looking for where to hide from the blood thirsty ones till the law enforcement agents came, preceding the Governor. It happened in a business nerve centre in Nassarawa State.
The atmosphere read ''strike them, clear them, kill them, let none survive, then when you done, we will come in to ensure to peace. We will keep doing it and spreading into other areas till there are very few of them left"
With a trembling heart, I woke up.

P.S: This calls for more prayers and efforts to avert such disasters
