The Nigerian musician who was very popular in the 1970s and '80s has been comfirmed dead. Our sources say he died on sunday, the 15th of January, 2017 at the age of 72 years. During his time, he put out eight albums of layered, wildly imaginative synth-funk. He halted recording in the mid-1980s when he converted to Christianity. Since then, if you mention his life in music around him, he stops the conversation dead. Before devoting himself to Jesus, Onyeabor made extended call-and-response disco-funk jams driven by the space-age sound of synthesizers and drum machines — very new tools at the time he was recording, especially in Africa. Combining these new sounds with Nigerian funk, Onyeabor made music that was exceptionally innovative and great to dance to. Some of his hit tracks were Good name, great lover, when the going is going good and so on. His old jam "When the going is smooth n good" inspired Timaya n Flavour's recent hit song "Wen Money no dey"
1970s and '80s Music lovers all over Nigeria will miss this talented musician. May his soul rest in peace!
