Eating 30 percent less than your daily recommended calories could lower your risk of acquiring age-related diseases by up to 40 percent, a new study claims
Studies on the benefits of calorie counting and aging used to use rodents for testing. But many scientists felt these animals did not age similarly enough for humans to be comparable.
This is why scientists at the University of Wisconsin–Madison (UW-Madison) and the National Institutes on Aging (NIA) decided to use a species of monkey - the rhesus macaque. Although their lifespans are a third of ours, they age similarly to humans.
Rhesus monkeys get grey hair and sagging skin, and can be diagnosed with the same diseases that aging humans are such as cancer, diabetes and dementia.

UW-Madison and the NIA had published conflicting studies on the benefits of calorie reduction over the last few years.
A 2009 UW-Madison study found monkeys who ate 30 percent less than their daily recommended calories reduced their rates of diabetes, cancer, heart disease, and death, as well as lengthened their lifespan.
Males tended to live up to two years longer and it was almost six years longer for females.

Three years later, a study by the NIA found that calorie reduction improved health, but did not have an improvement in longevity.
So what caused the debate?
One difference was the animals in the two studies had their diets restricted at different ages and different times.
