Virtually everyone seems to be full of criticism and resentment towards the immediate past Gambian Leader, Yahya Jammeh. Such great reproach towards him is expected for a man who ruled his Nation for 22 years, lost in the last general election, conceded defeat and suddenly became defiant to relinquish power.

What many critics of Jammeh may not know is that the society and almost every government in the world is filled with people no less different than Jammeh. A lot of people we hail and pick as role models are far more worse than Jammeh.
These group of people make use of careful approaches to satisfy their greed unlike the past Gambian leader. I choose to classify people in this category as The Wise Jammehs.

People in this group are not just found in governments alone neither are they far from reach, rather they are much more closer to us than we can imagine. We can easily find them in our families, places of worship, offices and workplaces.

In most offices/workplaces we find team leaders who are so obsessed with power and would stop at nothing to counter any force that works towards making them relinquish it. They care less about how their policies affects the organization and believe only they themselves can set the organization on a positive trend.

In the case of families it’s easy to locate a person or two who desires the entire family to bow to their feet. They believe only they themselves deserve prosperity and respect. They go to any length to command the respect of the entire family.

In places of worships you find a particular set of people who feel running the affairs of the Religious House is their birthright. They devise smart approaches that make them look nothing close to Jammeh. They create and head this administrative body today, next day they leave it for others to run and create another higher body they themselves would run. It keeps revolving just like that.

How about government? In governing the affairs of the Nation some few families think it’s their birthright to remain in power always. The Father rules today, after his tenure he acts like an advocate of democracy (an anti Jammeh) and brings his Son, Daughter or relation into power. It goes on like that for generations.

Every single individual that falls into any of the above categories shares the same degree of greed and power obsession just like the Jammeh that they all criticize. The only difference is the wise approach they apply.

The world would be a much better place whenever we as humans decide to be less Greedy and learn to give room for others to lead.

Mahatma Gandhi – The world has enough for everyone’s need but not enough for everyone’s GREED.
