Despite the efforts of striker Islam Slimani who scored a goal in each half, Algeria’s Africa Cup of Nations campaign came to a close without a win as they drew 2-2 with an already qualified Senegalese squad in Franceville.

The Algerians went into this game knowing that only an outright victory and a shock win for Zimbabwe over Tunisia would qualify them for the quarter[final stage of the tournament.

The Senegalese team – already qualified for a mouthwatering quarter-final against the Cameroonian team at the same ground on Saturday – made ten changes but the Algerians surprisingly just could not find their way through to getting a win out of this encounter.

Slimani goals were effectively cancelled by Papakouli Diop and Moussa Sow. The Leicester hit-man’s angry expression when he was substituted late on neatly showcased a tournament of wasteful underachievement for his country in Gabon.
