ABUJA—The National Assembly, has rejected the subsidy and tariff hike proposed by the power operators and the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC.

The Senate Committee on Power announced the rejection of the proposal when it’s Chairman, Senator Ben Bruce led the members on oversight function to the commission in Abuja.

The committee described the lack of power supply and demand for increase in tariff or subsidy as factor of monopoly created in the power sector.

Briefing newsmen shortly after the meeting, Senator Bruce said, “What I don’t want is for us to leave NEPA as a monopoly and create other monopolies with GENCOs or DISCOs and that is what we have had. Instead of having government monopoly, we now have monopoly in the private sector.

“For instance, if you want power in Benin, it is not that you have an option. There is only one Disco in Benin, only one Disco in Lagos, only one DISCO in Abuja. You don’t have other DISCOs to compete with, you only have one.

“So, if they tell you the rate is N100, it is N100 that is my problem. Two, if there is going to be an increase, I am familiar with increase of 3%, 5% annually. I am not favour as a Nigerian citizen of a 200 percent increase, the same way I am not in favour of a 200 percent increase in petroleum or any product.

“Nigerians are suffering enough and because Nigerians are suffering, I cannot in good conscience say to the average consumer of power in the village you are going to have a 300 percent increase and the argument they make is that it is the only way there would be power.”

Lol. Hike this , hike that. Same imbecilic arguments every time.

They told us investors will rush to build refineries when the price of petrol is increased. Yet, close to two years, not even one.

Has anybody noticed that they are alreading agitating for another rise in price to N165.

They said when electricity tariffs are increased, investors will pump money into the sector. They almost doubled the unit cost in the last one year, yet things are worse.

Bunch of confused human beings.

Well done senate, hope you won't come out tomorrow and reason with them undecided Everything is just not stable in this country sad angry

This privatisation of PHCN is the biggest scam ever.

Since privatisation, no single achievements, it is excuses most especially from th Discos. Imagine Discos rejecting scarce power. After mismanagement, they will always want to masses to pay from their incompetence. This privatisation has to be reviewed.

for the first time in my life I'm proud of the present senators especially saraki, imagine giving an opposition such a key position, if not for the Senate we for don suffer from data hike to fuel hike and now electricity, even if they hike it 800% there won't still be constant electricity, that can only be achieved through allocation and implementation of the budget and not killing Nigerians

Just imagine another hike in tarrif when we are yet to see a significant improvement over two years they increased it. What do these APC government take us for? They said let's increase the price of petrol so that foreign investors would rush in and build refineries that we haven't seen, they did same to the power sector yet we haven't seen even one albino. The is the worst scam I have ever seen.. May God judge all of una wey vote this government that don't take plight in the suffering of the poor masses.

Same problem over and over again, there is no favourable condition for investors to thrives, all privatization of governments companies are hijacked by the same governments officials and politicians, stealing money from Paul to pay Peter, how can there be efficiency, improvement and development? The issue of this country is more of process issue than leadership, this people will milk those compaines dry and later screamed for lack of funds so government can take over an empty companies, like the case of nitel.... Hike or no hike, until all these interference stop, there no way forward.

This is total rubbish! NERC has already increase the Tariff without the imprimatur of Nigerians, I don't know where we are heading to in country right now. From 24.08pe
rKWh to 31perKWh still no improvement in the supply of electricity generation and distribution.

hike that has being implemented already, check your current per unit charge it's 30 something upward from 24 when they increased before...

Disco will be "rejecting but still collecting estimating bill for that months they reject. if you refuse to pay it's for them to disconnect you, even cut and carry your wire.

Fashola should find a way to enforce prepared meter to be given for all, then the payment for it will be deducted gradually a we recharge.
The power sector will improve immediately, nobody will regret load"

Please stop spreading false information. Refineries take as long as 2-3 years to build. The subsidy was only removed April last year, less than a year ago. Dangote is building a refinery in Lagos that will cater to the supply needs of the entire West Africa, plus the refineries we already have are being refurbished. Nigeria should be a net exporter of Petroleum products by 2018/2019.
We would have stable power now if those idiots in the creeks stopped blowing up pipelines. Gencos cannot generate the power they need because of gas constraints. Discos cannot supply the very little they are supplied with because they have not been able to invest in the distribution network because the banks are not giving them money again. Between paying for the power from the Gencos and investing in upgrading the distribution network, almost nothing is left.
Banks are not giving credit because of the impact of the dollar scarcity on their books. There is dollar scarcity because the price of oil has plummeted, and also because those idiots in the creeks are blowing pipelines.
Whichever way you look at it, those idiots in the creeks account for almost all the problems in our power, economic and financial sectors.

Personally, I believe any tariff increase does not make sense.

The point cannot be over-emphasised that, from the way the electricity companies –generating, transmitting, and distributing – have carried on since they took over the respective sectors of power supply, these organisations have shown they are ill-prepared for the task that they accepted and indeed paid substantial sums of money for. And to date, they have not proven their capability to manage their businesses in line with international best practices.

Power supply remains abysmally inadequate and erratic, improving only marginally, and in fits and starts. Worse still, the companies have sustained a so-called fixed charge that extracts money from consumers as monthly payment for an installed meter which by the way, the consumer paid for in the first place; directly or otherwise.

Customers have received no satisfactory explanation for these bills; and those who protest are simply told to pay first or be disconnected. Despite the assurances of the Discos on delivery of pre-paid meters, consumers are yet to feel the impact, as the processes seem to take eternity.

Therefore, on what accounts are they asking us to pay more money?

Increase in light bills, without a corresponding increase in power supply is tantamount to stealing from Paul to pay Peter.
