In the mid-eighties, the IBB regime made a holistic study and changed our security agencies by breaking up the Nigeria Security Organization (NSO) into

State Security Service (SSS) –

Nigerian Intelligence Agency (NIA) – and

Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) –

All with specific functions for specialization and efficiency to strengthen security within and outside Nigeria. For instance the State Security Service (SSS); Responsible for domestic intelligence, Nigerian Intelligence Agency (NIA); Counterintelligence operations and Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA); Responsible for military intelligence.

The original Nigeria Police Service and the latter NSCDC (Nigeria security and Civil Defense Corp). All these services in the National Security corridor; have ended up performing over lapping functions. Yet adequate safe and peaceful society seems elusive in Nigeria.
