GOOD AGRICULTURAL PRACTICES (GAPs) IN VEGETABLES FARMING
GAPs are the necessary things to be done before (pre-planting), during (planting) and after planting (post-planting). Before I go into details of these practices let me quickly do a little clarification about vegetables, this is necessary as some people believe vegetables refer to leafy produce alone.
Vegetables can be classified into two categories, these are:
1. Fruit vegetables ( tomatoes, cucumber, watermelon, okra etc)
2. Leaf vegetables (pumpkin, celosia, amaranthus, cabbage, lettuce etc).
With that classification above I believe we should be able to differentiate between fruit and leaf vegetables. So let now look into those practices.
1. Pre-planting practices: These are the things expected of a reasonable farmer that want to start production. First thing I will tell you before going into production is to get your market, because it is only when you sell your produce and make a reasonable profit that you’re a successful farmer. This is necessary as you will be dealing with perishable goods.
Other things needed, are a fertile land either by purchasing or leasing and it should not be too far to your target market, source of water (borehole/ non-seasonal river), constant and cheap farm worker(s), farm tools and inputs. After all that are ready then you clear the land either manually or mechanically (using bulldozer), but I advise you get land where you don’t have much trees so that you can easily clear manually. This should be follow by ploughing and harrowing, mapping out of the production area from the road, bed making and mauring. After all that, set up your irrigation this can either be overhead or drip depending on your financial capability. Once you’re through with all these, then you’re good to go.
2. Planting practices: these involve sowing the right number of seeds per hole, using right spacing and depth. All these are necessary as they all affect the well being of the crops.
3. Post-planting practices: these involve thinning (reduction of plant population per stand); weeding (removal of unwanted plants on the farm), watering, tilling (loosing of soil particles), fertilizing at the right time, fumigation when needed at the right time, harvesting of produce when due and market.
