Here is a press statement from them:

TWO SOLDIERS DEMOTED AND IMPRISONED WITH HARD LABOUR FOR MALTREATING PHYSICALLY CHALLENGED MAN

Sequel to the video clip of two soldiers maltreating a physically challenged man on the streets of Onitsha, Anambra State, last Tuesday, in line with our zero tolerance of infringement of human rights by troops, those involved; Corporal Bature Samuel and Corporal Abdulazeez Usman of 82 Provost Company, have been arrested, summarily tried based on 2 count charges and found guilty.

Consequently, both have been sentenced to reduction in rank; from Corporal to Private Soldiers and 21 days Imprisonment with Hard Labour (IHL) respectively, which includes forfeiture of 21 days pay to the Federal Government of Nigeria.

The Nigerian Army has also reached out to the victim of their unjustifiable assault, Mr. Chijoke Uraku (alias CJ), as widely reported by the media.

We wish to reiterate our avowed determination to ensure that troops conduct themselves in the most orderly and professional manner at all times. Any act of indiscipline would not be tolerated.

You are please requested to disseminate this information to the public through your medium.
Thank you for your kind cooperation.

Brigadier General Sani Kukasheka Usman
Director Army Public Relations

I love this
But let's not pretend that the Nigerian Army now respects human rights
If you want us to take you seriously
Jail those soldiers that killed those protesting Ipob youths
Strip Buratai of the Chief of Army Staff title and let him face a court for the Murder of almost a thousand Shittes who blocked his motorcade in Kaduna and also jail all the soldiers involved in that massacre

Very true. If there is one sight I don't appreciate seeing everywhere and every time, it is men and women in military colours. Unless we are deceiving ourselves, we don't need as many military men and women as we have at present - the emphasis should be on quality, not quantity.

The story of the Nigerian police is a sad one really; they are neither performing nor respected. The priority now should be on overhauling the entire structure and modus operandi of the NPF. If the police is up and doing, most ugly scenarios in this country that later escalate into vengeful violence, and for which soldiers are subsequently deployed to handle, will be quenched before getting out of hand. At the end of the day though, everything boils down to the people, societal norms and social mores.
