There is an ongoing debate on whether or not hip-hop in Nigeria is dead. This discussion was stirred up by one of Nigerian ace rappers, Yung6ix, who posted on his social media platform that ‘when I wanna listen to African rap I play Yung6ix and SA rappers wtf is going on with the Nigerian Rappers ? Wake up’.The discussion was further stirred by veteran Nigerian rapper, Terry Tha Rapman, who claimed that Hip-hop in the country is dead. This spin of events has caused a climate of comments to gather around Hip-Hop in Nigeria. The widely asked questions bother on the declining Hip-Hop culture in the industry and the future of Nigerian Hip-hop.

Although it is true that the Hip-Hop culture in the country has declined over the years, and the glory days of Hip-Hop can only be reminisced about, it is also important to note that the Nigerian music industry holds a huge future for Hip-hop. Considering the new flock of rappers, the hip-hop culture in Nigeria could yet be revived. The following is a list of the vanguard of new school rap in Nigeria:

Boogey

He is probably the most promising lyricist in the country at the moment. Boogey has long been underrated, but the most recent nomination in the category of lyricist on the roll at the 2016 Headies Awards goes to suggest an increased appreciation for the Hip-Hop culture in Nigeria. In his time in industry, Boogey has released a number of projects including Artificial Intelligence, Irregularly Scheduled Programme EP. These projects have been commended for their quality by pundits and music lovers. His growing portfolio also includes a much appreciated presence on M.I’s Illegal Music Mixtape, the Mode 9 project and other notable features.

YCEE

After introducing himself with the monster hit Jagaban track, YCEE has continued to wax stronger in the industry with well circulated follow-up tracks and impressive features. YCEE has built a reputation for being proficient with rap. This has made him the industry’s go-to-guy for rap infusion. YCEE appears to share the burden of carrying Hip-Hop on his shoulder with other members of this list.

Mojeed

Many would consider Mojeed as an underdog, but his rap prowess can match that of any of the rap artistes in the country. His most notable work his Westernized West African. The album is rich with quality rap music and good Hip-Hop sound. If you thought Hip-hop in Nigeria is dead, you would have a rethink after listening to Mojeed. He is tipped to dominate the rap scene of the Nigerian music industry in coming future.

Dremo

The DMW signee made his first real statement with a cover of Panda, which he titled Fela. On the song, Dremo’s lyrical qualities, his superb delivery and alluring ability to flow were on display. He gained widespread attention with the track and he has since managed to put himself in the position of promising Hip-Hop artistes in Nigeria.

Poe

This is another gifted Nigerian rapper. He has gained acceptance for his lyrical creativity. He uses his lyrics to create imagery that music lovers seem to find relatable. Although he has been in the industry for quite some time, he remains relevant to the course for the revival of Hip-hop in Nigeria.
