“FG gets $1bn from Shell for Niger Delta”, Osinbajo says

Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo disclosed yesterday that the Federal Government has secured the funding of over $1 Billion from Shell Petroleum Development Company, SPDC, to develop the Niger Delta.

The Acting President made this statement in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, at the town hall meeting with governors, former governors, community leaders, women and various youth groups in the oil rich region, Irohinoodua was informed. The meeting was the second leg of its peace and dialogue tour of the region, which has witnessed a resumption of militant attacks on Oil facilities last year.

Osinbajo said that the $1billion at $200million per annum over a period of five years has been provided by Shell, for the provision of drinking water, conduct health impact assessment and demonstrate remediation technologies, according to information made available to Irohinoodua.

Irohinoodua gathered that the Presdient Muhammadu Buhari administration has prioritise the Ogoniland cleanup, following the neglect the region has faced amidst plenty, which must stop.

Osinbajo added that the inauguration of the governing council and board of Trustees on August 4, 2016 and January 12, 2017, are some of the measure taken by the present administration to ensure the total cleaning up of Ogoniland.

He however stressed that fears being expressed that these projects would be abandoned should not be entertained, as they were not been handled by the Federal Government.

“I have made notes, I have listened carefully; this will be a beginning that will change the narrative of the Niger Delta”, Osinbajo promised.
