The much sought peace in the Niger Delta may not be far from realisation, as the Federal Government has made a u-turn by deciding to work with illegal oil refiners, instead of destroying their refineries.

Ag Pres Osinbajo

Speaking, Tuesday, during a visit to Rivers State, acting President Yemi Osinbajo, said that Nigeria needs to provide work for people who make a living from illegal refining of oil in the Niger Delta in order to achieve peace.

“Our approach to that is that we must engage them (illegal refiners) by establishing modular refineries so that they can participate in legal refineries. We have recognised that young men must be properly engaged,” he said, without giving details.

He also said that the government will make more provisions for the amnesty scheme for former militants who laid down arms in 2009 in exchange for cash stipends and job training.

Illegal refining is one of the few businesses flourishing in an otherwise desolate region, as petrol is scarce in Nigeria due to the country’s derelict state refineries. Authorities had originally cut the budget for cash payments to militants to end corruption but later resumed payments to stop surging pipeline attacks crippling vital oil revenues.

“We have made more provisions for amnesty and provisions for social intervention,” Osinbajo told residents of Port Harcourt.

He has been visiting the Niger Delta since last month to calm tensions.

The government was said to have been holding talks with militants to end attacks on oil pipelines which cut the country’s output by 700,000 barrels a day for several months last year.

Sounds ok.

They should take their activities out of the mangrooves and set up shop where people could easily see them. The practice as it stands today results in more losses to their environment and the federal purse and makes nonsense of their litigations against big oil companies because they could easily point to those activities as responsible for the environmental pollution and degradation.

You can't take it away from those illegal refiners, FG should retrain them and use their expertise to set up modular refineries everywhere

Given the circumstances, I think this is long overdue. Standard modular refineries would indeed go a long way in addressing a significant number of issues in the industry.

Lol...this is just to pacify the laymen: theres nothing 'refinery' in the so called illegal-refineries: its just a collection of pots and firewood for cooking crude oil. Its a very crude means of extracting diesel from crude, burning away all the lighter components of crude and disposing the heavier components to the environment to go and cause more havoc.

Such things should never be heard of in a sane society.

Seriously is this man high?? There is no way u can making profit refining with those techniques... The only way they make profit is by stealing the crude

Module refineries are really expensive and u also need a standard petrochemical company to make them profitable...

They should go and find work.. Instead buy big boats for them to go fishing... They will make more money and we stop importing fish

I've never seen such a government that made things difficult for itself. There was an existing amnesty program before Buhari came in, and everything was working fine as kidnapping and bombing of oil installations was no longer something to worry about. Suddenly, Buhari came in and reminded everything and we went back to square one!. All the progress made by the Y'ardua and GEJ administration to boost oil production was just wasted!.

Well, legalizing the illegal refineries is something that should've been done many years ago. Government stand to make money by helping them establish modular refineries, then, have them buy crude officially. This talk of oil pipeline vandalism would naturally come to an end when this is done.
