In the last couple of days, many communities in Akwa Ibom State have lost peace and tranquility, no thanks to the recent harvest of death occasioned by robbery attacks and cult groups’ clashes.

For Instance, Idu Uruan, a suburb of the capital city, woke up on Sunday morning to the news of the death a prominent business man in the community, who was shot the previous night. In Ukanafun Local Government Area, four gunmen had stormed a popular market, Akpan Eshiet on Motorcycles, in the afternoon of Saturday, February 11. According to an eye witness, the gunmen after shooting and killing a man whose identity our reporters could not confirm, had shot sporadically into the air and waited for everyone to flee the scene.
Okoyo and Ikot Udobong villages in Ukanafun and Etim Ekpo Local Government areas respectively have lost their Village heads and Youth leaders respectively, to unknown gunmen. Meanwhile Communities in Ikot Ekpene and Obot Akara Local Government areas, have witnessed cult clashes that have claimed over 12 lives.

Speaking to our reporters, an indigene of Ukanafun, Pastor Ini Mark, said though the Police had made many arrests after Saturday’s incidents, people are now scared of the safety of their lives and properties. He attributed the poor turnout of people at event centers where valentine parties were held to the recent upsurge in crime in the Local Government. He further called on the State government to intervene.
