An amazing feature on the Facebook social network which has gained popularity amongst its army of users is the friendversary feature. The feature which was incorporated into the facebook feed sometime in September 2015 has gradually and steadily gained popularity.
In her article on the subject matter Lauren Cassani Davis, explained the idea behind the concept as, “The idea behind it, is to capture the “meaningful, shared histories” people have had on the site. The “friend anniversary” algorithm incorporates Facebook interactions like photo tags, likes, and wall posts to decide which of your online friendships are worthy of an anniversary. As a proxy for what friendship actually is and what makes it meaningful, it’s laughably simplistic.
As sound as the idea is, it leaves us with a basic question on what true friendship really is as we have seen that being digital pals doesn’t necessarily translate to being real-life pals, therefore if Facebook celebrates two digital friends, does that simply mean it is a real celebration or just an extension of a vague virtual reality that has no real life significance.
It is no longer news that reality is at the danger of being sunk into the ocean of a virtual state owing to the massive acceptance of the digital world as the new age reality and if conscious effort is not taken by individuals who visit all these multiple platforms to check and balance their dependence on the platform, we risk having a generation that have lost touch with reality and therefore allow themselves to be sunk into a virtual state where everything is now decided by computer algorithm instead of real logic and “common sense”.
