Why Gender Equality?

Systemic and Sporadic Discrimination
143 out of 195 countries guarantee equality between women and men in their constitutions as of 2014. Yet discrimination against women persists in many areas, directly or indirectly, through: laws and policies, gender based stereotypes, social norms and practices.

Violence against Women
In 1993, the UN General Assembly Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women provided a framework for action on the pandemic. But more than 20 years later, 1 in 3 women still experience physical or sexual violence, mostly by an intimate partner.

Female Genital Mutilation
133 million girls and women have experienced female genital mutilation in the 29 countries in Africa and the Middle East where the harmful practice is most common. This evil practice can cause severe emotional physical trauma; potential health risks, including reproductive and sexual health complications, and possible death through loss of blood or sepsis.
