Africa is a blessed continent which contains 54 nations and some territories. Many beautiful nations emerge from these nations and have one way or the other contributed to the worth of this continent.


Although there are many beautiful cities in African, some of them are dangerous.

Africa is the second largest continent in the world as well as the second most populated continent. The continent has lots of remarkable successes written under it. The continent is the youngest of all the continents in the world and is traced to be the continent where humans evolved.

Regardless of all the beautiful and notable things attached to this continent, there are some hidden spots in our star. There are some dangerous cities that you should be conscious of; these cities according to the 2017 ranking are not totally safe as there are records of crimes and violence marked against their names.

The African continent offers economic opportunities even though some of the cities are becoming susceptible to crimes. South Africa for many reasons has a high rate of criminality recorded against their name especially with the xenophobic attacks they have launched in recent times.

The analysis made by Numbeo compared the various cities in Africa based on the levels of crime, law and order, safety and security. Measuring these parameters made it easier to know the dangerous cities within the continent.

While you may be considering the most beautiful cities in Africa for vacation or tourism, it is imperative for you to know the cities that are not so safe in order to steer clear and make the right decision while exploring the continent.

1. Rustenburg, South Africa

Xenophobic activities in South African cities have made many people lose interest in visiting the country.

This city is located in the North West province of South Africa and is considered with lots of criminal activities. The crime score of Rustenburg was 85.71 out of 100 according to the 2015 rating.

This city records a high level of kidnapping, hijacking, household burglary, hijacking, muggings and street crimes. In the night, cars often get broken into with the valuables taken from it.

Living in this city requires caution as one could be attacked anytime. If you are driving through this city, you should avoid stopping at some areas in order to avoid being attacked.



2. Pietermaritzburg, South Africa

After Durban, Pietermaritzburg is the province’s second largest city. It is also the capital of Kwa-Zulu-Natal province in the nation of South Africa.

The level of crime in this place is quite high. Like Rustenburg, there are lots of armed robberies, arson, house break-ins, car theft and so on.

This city was rated number 38 of the 50 most violent cities in the world. In order to stay safe in this city, personal precautions will have to be taken. Avoid nighttime travel or walking alone in order not to be attacked.


6. Lagos, Nigeria

Lagos was listed as one of the most beautiful cities in Africa according to a 2017 ranking. This city also has its fair share of crime. According to Numbeo’s analysis, the city has a rating of 80.88 out of a possible crime score of 100.

People in Lagos are susceptible to muggings, armed robberies, kidnappings, exortion and carjackings. The armed robbers in this city climb up perimeter fences and subdue guards. Vehicles are also targeted by criminals while people are driving through the traffic.

Area boys terrify the streets of the Lagos mainland while cyber criminals siphon money out of people’s bank accounts.

7. Cape Town, South Africa

Crime levels in Cape Town are on the rise; although the city is also one of the most beautiful in the continent, it is ranked among the most violent cities in the world.

This city recorded more murders than both Johannesburg and Pretoria according to Africa Check. A lot of criminal activities like vandalism, mugging, theft, assault, use of hard substances and bribery go down in the South African city.

8. Port Elizabeth, South Africa

The coastal city of Port Elizabeth located in the Eastern Cape Province has a high score of criminal activities.

Although this city is loved by tourists because of the rich cultural heritage and windy coastal clime, the city has a crime score of 80.56 out of a possible crime score of 100.

Street crimes and muggings are rampart in this city like the other cities in South Africa. Xenophobic attacks are also firm here as foreigners are not totally safe. The city was rated 35 out of the world’s most dangerous cities.


9. Luanda, Angola

The beautiful and economic city of Luanda has its fair share of crime.

Angola’s capital city is no doubt a beautiful place even though it has a high crime rate. As at February 2016, Numbeo’s analysis gave it a crime score of 76.39 out of 100.

The popular crimes in the city are muggings, homicides, assaults, carjackings and armed robberies (either day time or night).

Thefts from stationary or slow-moving vehicles in traffic also occur, on this note, it is advisable to keep your windows up while driving in the traffic.

10. Nairobi, Kenya

Nairobi is Kenya’s capital city and the hub of the nation’s economy. This makes it attractive to foreigners who are looking forward to investing. Numbeo’s ranking of 2016 gave the city a crime score of 78.49 out of 100.

Carjacking is a common crime there; kidnappings, pick-pocketing and muggings top the chart of crimes there.

There are grenade attacks and terrorism too; people who cooperate when being robbed do not get harmed in most cases. Like Lagos, there are cyber criminals and credit card skimmers in the city too.

Abeokuta yesterday, today the only city in yorubaland lagos is one of the most dangerous cities i africa. Who knows what they they'll say when they see oshogbo and ibadan. Sophistiation may have found a new definition in us.

What a poorly written article. Mostly the writers biased opinion and little or no facts. Can he give us a foolproof discussion on crime with stats he can back up.
