Pillars Of Eternity 2: Deadfire Is Huge Crowdfunding Success by jimklef(m): 9:40am On Feb 26, 2017 |
Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire has broken all
records, raising $4.4 million from 33,00
backers in just a few weeks. The original
goal was to raise $1.1 million, but through
clever use of stretch goals — such as adding
a player ship, extra companions to join you
on your quest, and support for multiple
languages — Obsidian Entertainment was
able to gather four times that.
The first installment of Pillars of Eternity also
was a record breaker, gathering just under
$4 million on Kickstarter back in 2012 and to
this day stands in that platform’s top 25 of
best funded projects. Pillars of Eternity 2:
Deadfire was funded through a new
crowdfunding site, called Fig, which is
different from Kickstarter as it only allows
games to be funded, while also giving
backers the option to buy equity in the
projects and so, hopefully, make back their
investment.
That the idea behind Fig is a good one is
proven by the campaign for Pillars of
Eternity 2: Deadfire, as not only is it the
biggest success in the short history of the
new site, it’s also the most successfully
crowdfunded game of all time. Though $4.4
million pales beside the massive budgets
that AAA studios have a their disposal, for a
relatively small studio like Obsidian it’s an
almost ridiculous amount of money.
Currently, the studio still has a few stretch
goals left, which, with some luck, should be
able to carry the project up to the $5 million
mark, which would likely assure the top spot
for years to come.
When Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire is as yet
unknown, though the developers have their
work cut out for them; not only will the new
game take place in an entirely new setting
— the Deadfire Archipelago, far to the west
of the first game’s Dyrwood — they have
also promised a revamped UI and battle
system plus a whole host of other small
improvements. A few of the companions
from one of the best RPGs of 2015 should
be making a comeback as well, making the
new game not just a sequel, but also a
reunion.
Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire is currently in a
development stage and has no release date
yet.
