Nigeria’s Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo recently paid an unexpected visit to the country’s flagship airport, Murtala Muhammed International in Lagos. He must have left unimpressed with what he saw and would be relived there is a new terminal springing up nearby. While work continues apace on the Chinese built edifice which will hopefully become a saving grace to long suffering users of the current structure, Tola Badekale takes a look at some of the most frustrating aspects of everyday life at Nigerian airports.

1.TOILETS AND OVERZEALOUS STAFF CLEANING THEM: The Acting President briefly inspected toilets at the airport. He must have been well briefed on the poor conditions or did so based on personal experience suffered as an ordinary citizen prior to now. Toilets at Nigerian airports are not welcoming. This is made worse by cleaning staff ready to do your bidding no matter what brought you into the loo, ironically. Should they be there constantly? That’s open to differing opinions but one thing is sure, either as you enter the toilets, you are inundated with “Welcome sir” , “My Oga” (My Boss), “Happy Weekend” etc. This is all in a bid to make you part with some change. The most annoying tactic of all is they fleece the tissue papers from where they are meant to be and manually roll them for you, so you have that extra personal service, for some “anything for us?”
