The 8th Senate has commended the 15-person delegation of the United Nations (UN) Security Council, led by Matthew Rycroft, the UK Permanent Representative to the UN and the Security Council’s President for the month, for deeming the crisis in the North East worthy of a high level delegation and response.
Speaking in Abuja, on Tuesday, the Senate spokesperson, Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, stated that the Senate fully aligns with the stance of the UN delegation. The Senator also reiterated the call of the delegation by stating that truly, ‘Development is the only long term solution to the insurgency in the country.’

Abdullahi mentioned that the Senate considers the relief, rehabilitation and ultimately resettlement of all Internally Displaced Persons as one of its social impact priorities, this is why, under the leadership of the Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, the 8th Senate had categorized the passage of the North East Development Commission (NEDC) Bill as pivotal in Nigeria’s efforts to restore peace and security in the North East.

“With all that we continue to see, it goes without saying that the development of the North East is the only way to end the insurgency for good,”

the spokesman said, “It is great that the UN has sent this high level delegation to see for themselves what our fellow Nigerians are going through, and to renew the international commitment to a crisis that has displaced approximately 2 million Nigerians.”

On the next steps after the visit by the delegation, Abdullahi said that the Senate would continue to work with the UN Security Council as development partners, while emphasizing that the Senate stands committed to the well-being of the people.

He said:

“Undoubtedly, I am sure that I speak on behalf of all of my distinguished colleagues when I say that we will continue to do everything within our mandate to ensure that our brothers and sisters in the North East, who have been affected by the insurgency, will once again have safe and sustainable homes and environment to return to. We will do this throughy all the tools at our disposal.”
