Thirty reasons why the power target failed By Adelani Ogunrinade IT is now December 2009, power supply remains epileptic and those of us who came home expecting to find the promised delivery of 6000 Megawatts have gone back to oil our hurricane lanterns. What happened to the promise that we will all smile come December? One of the most hilarious reasons given was that the government promised production of the power but not its distribution! Do not forget that this power game has been going for a long time. One of the Power Ministers promised power in six months. Another promised a year only to bring smile to the face of all Nigerians. Nigerians are smiling alright, but this is only because Nigerians are the happiest people on earth. Besides they got used to empty promises, so that any promise makes them smile. http://odili.net/news/source/2009/dec/15/34.html I still verily believe that this target will be met in a not distant future but then demand would have shifted upwards on account of the strange things that people do in the dark, that it may amount to a shifting target. As a patriot, I went to town to see how Nigerians are coping and why the target has not been met. Here are the select 30 reasons why the target has not been met: Blame the Bar Rotimi Akeredolu and the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) spent too much time at the Bar drinking and discussing the health of the President that they failed to remind this Government of this constitutional provision and democratic dividend. Blame ASUU The Academic Staff Union (ASUU) did not include power in its list of demands before calling off their strike. They were just too selfish! The President's absence President Yar'Adua is the driving force behind the power project. Due to his present indisposition, the target cannot be met until he assumes the reins of office again. It is Obasanjo's fault Power generation is a third term project that did not feature on the Seven-point agenda of his successor. Since the third term project failed, the target is bound to fail. The Chinese Contractor The Chinese always calculate time in lunar years. When they said 2009, they meant 2012. IBB and his Boys IBB is behind all transformer explosions. No wonder the target cannot be met. And General Abacha If only we can lay our hands on the loot stashed in Switzerland, we will complete all projects and even exceed the target. Climate Change As a result of global warming, the water level in Kainji Dam keeps on receding and power generation keeps declining with it. Snakes in the turbine What to do now? Snakes keep on interfering with the turbines. This is a natural disaster! Niger Delta Militants When they cannot disturb the pipelines, they now interfere with the gas lines to the power houses The Police again! If only the Police have more helicopters to carry out aerial surveillance, the cable thieves will not be so successful. The Honourable Minister was misquoted The Hon. Minister meant that every household should be able to generate 6000 watts by December. Most Nigerian household have achieved that target! The impact of the Failed Banks on power generation While CBN's Mallam Sanusi Lamido was busy fighting the failed banks in the upstream sector, little did he know that they (the failed bank executives)will sabotage the economy in the downstream sector! It is called co-generation! Government cannot be expected to meet the power target alone ! All patriotic Nigerians in the public, private and organised labour sectors must join hands to make sure the target is met through generating their own electricity. We must rebrand! Nothing emphasises the need to urgently rebrand as the crisis in the power sector We must unbundle the Power Corporation of Nigeria (PHCN) When we unbundled NEPA and re-bundled PHCN, little did we know that we must bundle again so soon after un-bundling. It is the Budget Problem Enough money was not appropriated in this year's budget. Enough has been earmarked in next year's budget Either more taxes or the withdrawal of petrol subsidy - choose ! If the power target is to be met, either we withdraw the petrol subsidy or increase taxes. Better to continue using your generator on subsidised petrol-what do you think ? It is an Export-import Problem. When we exported electricity to neighbouring Niger Republic, little did we know that we need to re-import from Sierra Leone in order to meet the deficit. It is the Multinational Companies We know they don't love us and have been sabotaging the gas supply to the power plants so that we can continue to import generators from their mother countries Blame it on the Governors Forum At the time we wanted to fix a date for the launching of the power project, the Governors chose to go to Harvard. Now that they are no longer going, we need to fix a new target date The Millenium Development Goals (MDGs) Power (unlike water) was not included in the UN MDGs . The government is focused on the MDGs at this point in time. Cost-containment Measure The administration decided to scale down the project as a cost-containment measure. It was during the Examination Period As the nation is blessed with too many universities all reading and doing examinations, there was too much demand on electricity that the target could not be met during this examination period. The U-17 World Cup We used too much power during the U-17 World Cup that the target could not be met! We were encouraging the use of alternative Energy We should not depend on only one source of energy. If we cannot meet the target from one source, we should diversify and try another source just as the government has taken the lead on solar energy It is work in Progress No administration can be expected to complete all projects in one fell swoop. Nigerians are too impatient Wetin (what do)you want to use all that power for self? When everything fails take the prayer route! Let us pray for the success of this administration. Amen Prof Ogunrinade of the National University of Lesotho is presently on Christmas vacation in Nigeria |

There is only one reason why we can't have power - steady power supply and its stares us in the face daily, all the time - CORRUPTION. Pure and simple. This CORRUPTION thing, we must understand, transcends the giving and taking of bribe. It manifests itself in many ways including the use of inappropriate personnel. For example when you have a seventy year old man as a security guard that's corruption. The fellow is not going to be chasing down and jumping over fences after some young thug! and that's a fact. When you have a pretentious use of labor intensive policy where appropriate machines should be used to clean the highways or tend the landscape - that's corruption. How much of the planet can one person sweep clean in a day and at what rate? In respect to NEPA/PHCN how many of them are actually qualified engineers or lines men or technicians that are truly qualified. How long does it takes to discover and rectify a fault if you know what you are doing? But we live in darkness for years in some neighborhoods for the simple reason that the idiots that work for PHCN got the job for corrupt reasons, not appropriate qualification, and therefore have no idea where to begin to solve a problem whose solution is otherwise apparent. This analogy transcends all spheres of our polity. |

Op, simply put it as a result of corruption, ineptitude and bad leaders. We keep recycling same group of old folks with archaic way of reasoning and outdated thinking faculty and we are expecting a positive results. |
