I studied Petroleum Engineering for complete five years and after all the struggles and frustrations i passed through in school i came out with 3.47 CGPA, i proceed to serve my father land, before then i promise myself that i will hustle to get a job in order to support my siblings in school, i started sending applications even when i was serving and after my youth service, in general i am very sure i have submitted not less than 60 applications both online and offline but i have never received any interview invite. I have given professionals my CV to re-write for me several times but all to no avail. I am really regretting studying Petroleum Engineering here in Nigeria. Please i really need a help i am dying gradually.

Ma guy.

I just graduated last year. Mechanical. I won't say that I totally regret spending 5 years to study my course, but sometimes I feel that I could have done better things with that 5 years.

It was in my final year that realized that there may be no place for me in the labour market. Moreover, I don't want to be employed by people (company) who'd probably think that they are doing me a big favour picking me instead of thousands of others.
In summary, I'm into web development now. I'm still learning it. I should be done with my training in August. I've already started working on projects now.

Find a skill, develop it and people will look for you.

Firstly bro, your inability to land a job thus far has nothing to do with your course of study, it's true that the recent downturn in the oil sector really affected the prospects of young fresh out petroleum engineers this past few years, but still....its not course specific.

You need to look inwards, there must be something else you can do apart from those mundane classroom equations, and log-log graph. What education does for you is to widen your horizon, change your viewpoint in life, make you see opportunities and situations differently.

A few weeks ago I had an outburst like yours here on this forum, I got plenty of advice and encouragement from loving and well meaning Nigerians, for which I'm grateful. But the best of them all is the one which I decided myself, build my escape hatch. See before I reluctantly took up a very low paying job that am doing now, I tried out my hands on small scale manufacturing, brother I understood all the concept, it was very easy, just that capital was my bane, bit I'll leave that in the womb of time. I even passed some time in the medical sector, brother I was understanding the concepts, I was ace. What is my point, you're an engineer, it doesn't matter which, it doesn't matter what you engineer, just start engineering something, it's in you.

Lastly where is your location bro?

You are wrong. I have a friend that studied same mechanical engineering DT his starting salary was 17 or 21 million naira . this was over 7 years ago. While in school, one should do everything to be above his peers. This my friend did AutoCAD while we were in final year and was so good at designs. He also studied french in alliance francais shorly after we graduated. He applied for msc in usa, got some scholarship ,applied for us visa and left for studies. He was recruited by the oil coy to come back and work in Nigeria. Of note is that this guy made 2.1 like most other ppl. As I speak with you he is married with his family based in us. He shuttles us and Nigeria at will.

Summary, you should not regret your course. Try and get practical skills that sells in your line of training. You can add project management training to your mech eng. Keep pushing and one day , you will land a mega deal. My hubby immediate elder bros is a mech engineer and he is currently building two houses at the same time. Also bought a brand new SUV this year. Mech engineering still pays.

Problem is not the course, it's the country in general.
You may or may not get an employment in the oil sector. You just have to be patient and network.

Take things easy and don't give any chance for depression. Just put everything in God's hand and always seek His opinion on the path He has assigned to you because failure to follow His predestined path for you will never lead you to the promise land.

Op, a number of graduates keep making the mistake of thinking they have to practice what they studied. In Nigeria, not necessarily.

Some things you might consider doing:

1. Just keep applying for any position you can function in (engineering, banking, accounting, etc.), NOT ONLY ENGINEERING.

2. Pending when the Job comes, you might want to consider doing some GENUINE online business for just a token instead of paying experts to
rewrite your CV (waste of money for a fresh graduate). POLITELY CONTACT ANY NAIRALAND ADMINISTRATOR FOR ADVISE ON THIS.

3. THERE'S A SECRET I LEARNT FOR GETTING FULFILLED. THE SECRET IS SIMPLY VOLUNTEERING.
THERE ARE A NUMBER OF CHILDREN WHOSE PARENTS CANNOT AFFORD SCHOOL FEES/EXTRA LESSONS/COACHING.TRY TEACHING THEIR
CHILDREN AND SEE WHAT GOD WILL DO FOR YOU IN A SHORT TIME. TRUST ME, THIS WORKS.

4. Stop wasting your energy on complaining. If this becomes a habit, it will ruin you psychologically when you eventually go for an job interview or
an aptitude test.

5. Gather yourself around positive people always.Just get busy with something.DO NOT GIVE ROOM FOR IDLENESS BECAUSE THAT IS WHEN THE
DEVIL WILL STRIKE.

See you soon at the top. Don't forget to come share the good news here when that big company employs you. wink

Over 7 years ago you say. My dear, things and times have CHANGED. International Oil Companies in Nigeria are jettisoning some of the staff they have. I did my 4th year internship in one of them, so I really know what I am talking about.

When was the last time you saw recruitment advert by IOCs (Chevron, Shell, Mobil, etc.)?

Believe it or not, your friend was lucky. If it won't be too much to ask, ask him about his friends he graduated with and what they do now. (Give me feedback please). The field is saturated and more people are being churned out with no companies to absorb them. It is sad that we ignorantly refuse to embrace that reality. But then whether we choose to or not it doesn't change anything.

It's good that we remain positive anyway, while thinking about what to do next. As for me, I have chosen to not stay at a spot and wait for someone to "do me a favour". (That's what it feels like getting employed these days)

For engineering aspirants, go for Civil, EE, Mechanical,Marine,Systems, Biomedical, Building and Architecture.

For Medical/Health sciences, go for Pharmacy, Medicine, Dentistry,Nursing, Optometry, Med lab and Radiography.

Bro stay strong.. It's not the course, it's the way the country is. I would recommend that anytime you apply to a company, you should followup by looking for members of staff of the company through linkedin. You should also make yourself more marketable through professional trainings and certifications relevant to your field.

People should stop having this misconception that the course one studied in school does not determine ones chances of being gainfully employed. For crying out loud it does! It was that same deception that made me not to rewrite jamb while doing my 1st degree in Biochem. They'l continue to give people false hope that you can work in so and so place only for you to finish and be confronted by the reality.

Right from NYSC camp, you will discover that your friends in the medical/health profession are on camp with the cars they bought during internship and will earn higher than you during service. All my friends who were in pharmacy and medicine when i was doing BCH are gainfully employed today, while those in biochem are still wondering from one lesson center to another in name of 'hustling'.

Do you know that the number of pharmacists we have in Nigeria is not enough to serve lagos state alone let alone the various specialties in pharmacy? So there is high demand for Pharmacists likewise doctors.
