*ADP, US Embassy Official Meeting*

An official of the United States Embassy in Nigeria, Mr. Robert Wong has stated that the survival of democracy in Nigeria would depend on the ability of leaders to establish and nurture strong political parties with clear economic and political ideologies.
Mr. Wong who is the political officer at the US Embassy said this at a meeting in Abuja with the leadership of the Action Democratic Party (ADP). He disclosed that the meeting was necessitated by the desire of the Embassy to establish partnership with the ADP to nurture democracy in Nigeria. He declared that the Embassy would study the Manifesto and Constitution of the ADP to ascertain the party’s ideology and determine areas of assistance and collaboration. Mr. Wong commended the leadership of the party for the high level of organization and preparedness he noticed at the party’s National Headquarters and expressed optimism that the ADP would certainly do well in politics of Nigeria.
In a response, the National Chairman of the ADP, Engr. Y. Y. Sani expressed gratitude to the US Embassy for arranging the meeting with the party’s officials. He further said that Nigeria is an important member of the International community with strategic interest is that cannot be ignored. Engr. Sani noted that the ADP would pursue an economic policy that would be private-sector driven with special empowerment programmes for women and the youth.
He added that the ADP would avoid the pitfalls which he said had adversely affected the other political parties. He listed the pitfalls as lack of internal democracy and impunity.
In a similar vein, the National Secretary, Dr. James Okoroma disclosed that the ADP had made constitutional provisions for organs that would ensure the participation of all Nigerians in politics at all levels.
Another leader of the party Chief Alani Bankole, from the South West spoke on the need to determine the future of the country through active participation in Government.
Other leaders of the party present at the meeting were; the National Vice Chairman (South East), Chief Rex Onyeabor, the National Youth Leader, Prince Edobor Oghosa, National Legal Adviser, Barr. Obadiah J Bichi, the Deputy National Woman Leaders (North) Engr. Esther Ochei and Bishop Stella Sheidun (South), the National Administrative Secretary, Hon. Pam Ibrahim among others.
