Please I need expert advice.

Just rented a 10 acre piece of land in Abeokuta but the money the labourers there are charging is exorbitant (18000-20000) per acre. That's about 200,000 naira alone on land clearing. But a friend suggested that I use chemical to clear the land.

So I want to know if it's advisable that I use chemical for land clearing of maize/cassava farm.

Whoever has an idea should please respond.

This is giving me sleepless nights already.

I'll advice you look out for cheap labour outside that area, because you'll still have to plough the land and it won't be possible for tractor to move.

How about using herbicide (chemical) to clear the non-woody plants before using labour to cut down the trees and shrubs?

Go to any agrochemical store and ask for Unitedforce.

get labourers to remove d few trees.Tractor will work on d shrubs.Then spray immediately after tractorization with pre&post herbicide. This will rid the area of weeds..

I will advice u to do a smaller number of acres,with time u can expand.by then u can understand things more.labour&cost of such things doffer from place to place

I've actually paid for 10 acres. And I have little farming experience. I studied agric related course but the only problem I'm having here is that of labour cost

Y don't u hire tractor nd clear it at once, I know you will get tractors to do d job in abeokuta, please where is ur farm.

use tree killer chemical to kill d trees & spray herbicides to kill d grasses,which u will still need 2 remove the standing dead grasses with cutlass,gather & burn them.That land is about 60 plots it is advisable u start small,large farm required high cost to manage,large farm need 2 be mechanised to b successful,u will need over a #1milln to successfully manage such large cassava & maize farm.

Thanks. I'm already speaking with a tractor driver and we are negotiating. #4000 per acre. But he wants to check the place himself to see if it is 'tractorable'.

PS: You don't need up to a million naira to manage 10 acres of maize and cassava farm. About 500,000 naira will do at the beginning. I've done all the necessary enquiries plus not my first time of farming.

Sure. Renting of tractor is quite cheap here. In fact in most LG in Ibadan, they collect 5000 naira per acre. And there ways you can still bend the rules too.

I just got 2 acres of land with the intention of planting maize and cassava. Which chemical can I apply to control weed that won't affect either of the crop?

First, show the picture of the vegetation for proper advice.

Update:
I have been able to clear the land and planted my maize.
The farmland has been extended to 30 acres of maize only for now.

But there is another little problem. The maize is about three weeks old but it has almost been taken over by weed. This is despite spraying with athrazine and ParaeForce herbicides immediately after planting.
Now I don't know which herbicide to use that will not affect my maize but will kill the weeds both broadleaf and grasses.
Any expert advice will be appreciated.

Can't u do manual weeding? because at that stage, maize plant shd be free from weed totally. Pls act fast
