I wanted to respond to this topic and to put the record straight

U.I is not the oldest university in Nigeria as the OP wants to portray. UI became a university in 1962. That was 2 years after UNN in 1960. Until 1962, UI was just a college of the University of London.

That was also alluded to here
Established 68 years ago, the University of Ibadan, UI as it is fondly referred to, is the first University in Nigeria. Until 1962 when it became a full-fledged independent University, it was a College of the University of London in a special relationship scheme.

UNN is the first indigenous, full fledged and independent university in Nigeria. That is why it is called University of Nigeria. Duh!!!!!!!

You are somewhat right about that assertion because many of the East African Universities (like Makarere, Nairobi, Kenyatta I think) started counting their year of establishment from when they severed relationship from the collegiate system that they have been practicing to become a full-fledged university...

I don't know why UI still sees her college years to University of London as part of when she was established as a full-fledged university. UNN, itself was established in 1955 but she started counting her years from when academic activities started in 1960, in October precisely during the euphoria of Nigeria Independence.
