The Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), is the only Federal University Of technology in the south-south and south eastern part of Nigeria. The University is widely respected throughout Nigeria not just because it is a premier University of technology, but also because it produces high quality graduates.

There are some words only FUTO students can relate with. If you are not a FUTO student or alumni, you will not relate quite well with these words. We decided to compile a list of these words and offer short explanations on them as it relates to the students studying in the Federal University.

Formation

Surely, every FUTO student can relate with the “formation” word, even the class of students that do not watch or play football at all. In FUTO, formation simply means a sitting arrangement that will allow students communicate each other during an examination/test without the exam invigilators knowledge. FUTO students do not joke with their formation; it is also considered an expensive joke to try to tamper with a student’s planned formation, he/she will surely not take it lightly.

There are 4-4-2, 3-4-3, 4-3-3, 4-5-1, 4-2-3-1, 4-3-2-1, 5-3-2 formations, it all depends on the course and the exam invigilator especially when one remembers that exam malpractice is considered a serious crime in FUTO; it could terminate one’s admission in the institution.

Airport

What do you think an airport mean? The conventional airport? Guess again because you got it all wrong. This word is most popular among students residing in the school hostel because they are the ones that regularly use the “airport.” In FUTO, an airport is simply any bush where students defecate. Students residing in the school hostel, don’t like using the hostel’s toilet facilities, reason being they are mostly dirty and messed up by the students, forcing the students to “upgrade” nearby bushes to “airports.”

I don’t know how they came about this kind of name, but in FUTO, when a student (especially a school hostel occupant) tells you he wants to visit the airport, you know what he is talking about now.

Madam Quantity

There is a saying in FUTO that goes thus; any FUTO student that does not know madam Quantity, is that one a FUTO student? That’s how serious it is. Believe me, madam quantity has saved the lives of many FUTO students who depend on her cheap food to sustain themselves in school. At madam quantity’s eatery, you could eat yourself to a protruding tummy (LOL) with as low N150. The name of the eatery was not originally “Madam Quantity,” it is the students that gave her the name due to the size of her food, the owner of the eatery had no other choice than to take the name as it has become a phenomenon in FUTO. So, the next time you visit FUTO, check out madam quantity’s place.

Akanot

This word is quite new in FUTO, but trust me, the name is really trending as every FUTO student (especially regular undergraduate students) can now relate to “AKANOT”. FUTO’s current SUG president bears a surname “Akano,” it’s quite unfortunate that the students view their president as under-performing hence they gave him the name “AKANOT;” a way of saying “I Cannot.” We learnt, the name came about due to his inability to reconcile the school management properly with the students, which was part of the reasons for the FUTO students’ February protests. It could be a good thing for the gentleman, especially if you can relate to the saying “Bad publicity is better than no publicity”.
