Obey Court Order, Release Nnamdi Kanu – The Sun Newspaper Writes Buhari by Igboblog: 8:38am On Mar 21, 2017 |
We add our voice to those of many concerned Nigerians who have appealed to the Federal Government to urgently release Mr. Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who has been incarcerated since October 2015 in spite of several court orders that he be released on bail. The latest calls for Kanu’s release have come from former Senate President, Mr. Ken Nnamani, and the Nzuko Umunna, a Pan-Igbo organisation under whose aegis Professor Charles Soludo, former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, and Professor Pat Utomi, a political economist and social critic, spoke on the need for the Federal Government to obey court orders, even when such orders are unpalatable. Other calls have come from the Deputy Senate President, Dr. Ike Ekweremadu, and former Abia State Governor, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu. Inter Society, an international society for civil liberties and rule of law, has written an open letter to world leaders in Europe, America, Canada, and their parliaments, and to international multilateral organisations, drawing attention to the grave injustice of the continued incarceration of Mr. Nnamdi Kanu. That this administration has to be reminded to obey court orders dents its progressive credentials. Disobedience of court orders is antithetical to democratic ethos. It is also universally acknowledged as the most visible and potent threat to democracy. There can be no rule of law where court orders are routinely ignored and treated with disdain. We believe that Nigeria is a democracy and the Nigerian Constitution is the grund norm which must be respected at all times. Any disrespect of a constitutional order is tantamount to a subversion of the legal system and a breach of the democratic ideals on which the present dispensation rests. Chapter 4, Section 35 of the Constitution spells out in unequivocal terms how Nigerian citizens must be treated when they are suspected of having committed an offence. Section 35 (4) specifies that “any person who is arrested or detained in accordance with subsection (1) (c) of this section shall be brought before a court of law within a reasonable time and if he is not tried within a period of (a) two months from the date of his arrest or detention in the case of a person who is in custody or is not entitled to bail; or (b) three months from the date of his arrest or detention in the case of a person who has been released on bail, he shall be released (without prejudice to any further proceedings that may be brought against him) either unconditionally or upon such conditions as are reasonably necessary to ensure he appears for trial at a later date.” The continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu cannot be supported by law, policy or politics. Each day he is held in detention is an extra day he garners more support, he grows in stature as a prisoner of conscience and as a freedom fighter. The longer he is held, the more he is seen as bearing the cross of the Igbo people, and the more the persecution perception of the Igbo takes on greater reality. The continued incarceration of Nnamdi Kanu will continue to be an issue for concern. The most reasonable way to end the IPOB protests is to release Nnamdi Kanu and ultimately halt the circle of violence and bloodletting occasioned by the frequent clashes between security agencies and the group. Whether he's released today or not, what's destined must happen. The earlier we understand that this country won't last for centuries the better. Those that are against Biafra are just creating problems for their children and generation to come because, their children will continue to struggle to keep Nigeria one like their fathers are doing today and Biafra won't give up their agitation no matter what you offer to pacify them hence no development for Nigeria. Everybody should go their seperate ways for peace and development to come. This struggle to keep Nigeria one is endless until this country is divided. 26 Likes 5 Shares |

Unnecessary detention of Nnamdi causing unnecessary tension in the polity. I wonder why this corruption fighting government has issues with obeying court orders. 10 Likes 3 Shares |

Was thinking about the fellow that jumped into the lagoon yesterday and just couldn't help but feel sad.... spent time wondering what could have moved the young man to such an action. Heard on radio this morning that he was just 35 years.... At 35 he was a doctor... had a car, and even a driver...from the Nigerian standard that sounds like a successful young man in all ramifications. There probably were lots of his secondary school mates or his university mates envying him. But truth is no one knew what he was going through..... I concluded that he was having a bout of depression and it took a bad turn. It brings me back to us. I will ask some pertinent questions that I am also guilty of. 1) When last did we check on a friend that we haven't heard from in a while? 2) When last did we visit some one we knew was finding things difficult? 3) When we see someone who had it going so well and all of a sudden is finding it hard to make ends meet, do we make fun of them? 4) When was the last time we called the names of particular people in our midst during our prayers, to intercede on their behalf ? 5) When last did we encourage another with the Word of God The economy is tough and truly people are finding it more difficult to survive. We need to watch out for each other. We need to call, we need to visit. I am hoping we can bring some suggestions to make our welfare better. We never know who needs just an ear to listen to all the problems he/she is going through. Let's be more caring..I am guilty of this too. I am going to try as well. To at least call someone per day just to say hello! Lets ponder on this for a few seconds and decide to assist each. 2 Likes 1 Share |

Even God Almighty did not condone treasonable felony, as loving and forgiving as He is. He dealt with Lucifer accordingly. FG should deal decisively with the rebellious, treasonable felon, hate preaching, war mongering, religious crisis inciting and olosho carrying Crowned Prince of Kuje Prison. In this matter, he is not bound and will not to obey the court under the guise of Terrorism and National Security exigencies. His kinsmen can resume their early morning jogging exercise if they are pained and Nigeria too will resume easy target practise as well. 2 Likes 1 Share |

Stricker321: Every right comes with a Responsibility. Right now not absolute. He has the right to speech but his right to freedom after his speech cannot be guaranteed. His right does not give him license to preach hate against others, to call for killing of others, to solicit for funds to.procure weapons against a Sovereign state and to threaten to wage war against a Sovereign state. Doing all that with his right calls for him being dealt with decisively under the terrorism and national security rule. 2 Likes |

Of course, I have serious issues with his cause esp when he allegedly threatened fire and brimstone against the Nigeria state - or "zoo" in his case. However, I have to agree with Sun that his continued incarceration serves absolutely no purpose whatsoever - in addition to being illegal. Seriously what is the government afraid of? What do they really think he can do when released? Forget the noise you see on NL. Having worked in the East, I know a number of Igbos, particularly the intelligentsia, don't support him or his cause. Nonetheless, his continued detention, against court ruling, is not going down well with them. PLS FG release the man. thanks |
