I am a 41-year-old Englishman who has been married to a Yoruba woman for 12 years - she is 43. Both of us were fed up with the negativity that surrounds 'mixed' marriages (here in England at least) and wanted to show them in a positive light. This was the reasoning for our writing the book: One Love Two Colours: The unlikely marriage of a Punk Rocker & his African Queen, published via Matador. You will find, if you go down the 'mixed' approach to love, that people have far more in common with each other, than they care to admit. In our case both of us (not to mention our family and friends) have gained much from our mutual respect and desire to learn about the others culture. Sadly, too many people rely on myth, hearsay and stereotype where mixed marriages are concerned. Successful mixed marriages are not about one culture being taken over by another, or by couples being 'colour-blind' - oh no. What they are, are relationships just the same as any other - with the dominant factor being a woman's hormones and a man's ego!
