Howard University is a private, research university with high research activity recognised worldwide,which has been in existence since the time of the American civil war.The university hold a black history of African-American and The black race as a whole as it collect and preserve black culture.Below are a 12 facts about HOWARD UNIVERSITY you probably don't know.

1. It was formerly known as Howard Normal and Theological School for the Education of Teachers and Preachers


2. MEANINING OF THEIR MOTTO : Veritas et Utilitas means "Truth and Service" which was given to it due to its historical origin for missionaries.


3. It was originally Founded in 1866 by missionaries as a training facility for black preachers known as African-American clergymen.


4.. Its earned its historic name after Civil war hero General Oliver O. Howard.


5. On May 1, 1867 Howard University held its first official class as a university with five white female students, who were the daughters of two of its founding fathers.


6. The first courses offered in the University where Liberal Arts and Medicine.


7.General Oliver Howard who presided over the university from 1869 to 1872.saw to the education of freed and escaped slaves of about 150,000.


8.The first black man to preside over the school was Dr. Mordecai Wyatt Johnson in 1926.

The first students protest that happened in Howard University was in 1989 when students rose up in protest against the appointment of then-Republican National Committee Chairman Lee Atwater as a new member of the university's Board of Trustees. Activists for students disrupted Howard's 122nd anniversary celebrations, and eventually occupied the University's Administration building.Within days after the protest, both Atwater and Howard's President, James E. Cheek, resigned.


11. The school has had 17 presidents since it origin.And the 17th who also is the present president is Wayne A.I. Frederick who has been in that position since 2003 till date.


12. Howard research institutes is historically known and recognized as one of the world's largest and most comprehensive repositories for the documentation of the history and culture of African people in Africa, America, and other parts of the world.
