Practical Steps To Starting A Poultry Farming Business - Part 1 by MasExcel19(m): 8:12pm On Mar 28, 2017
Idhlntroduction:
In a few days I will be exposing to u the following:
-what u need to set up a poultry farm
-the techniques involved in growing day old chicks
-how to minimise death rate
-how to manage ur farm cost of production to maximise profit - how to sell ur birds and lots more
I shall start by explaining the business and various points of entry.
There at least 3 popular types of birds. They include
1. Cockereal: these type require 6 months to come to maturity. There meat is slim and strong. They come in white or white and black mixed colour.
2. Broilers: they get matured from 5 weeks depending on the breed and feed quality. Their meat is usually fat, oily and soft. They are grown mainly for their meat. They are the most fragile and get weak legs from over weight. They are mostly white or have a touch of brown on their bodies
3. Layers: they are the ones that lay the eggs u eat. They are mostly Brown or black in colour. They start laying from 6 months and lay sometimes for over a year depending on nutrition. If the breed is good they can lay twice a day with good nutrition. They are the most capital intensive but more profitable than the rest
In all three their point of entry are similar but an additional one is added to layers. Here are the points of entry:
a. Day old chicks ie doc - these are newly hatched chick. U book and get dem
b. Week /weeks old chicks - u can buy at 2 weeks, 3, 4 etc
c. Point of lay- these are layers which are just about starting to lay.
In my next post I shall further explain which entry I think is best out of all three and many more.
If u have any questions regarding this post pls ask. I hope this has been helpful.

What you need to Start a Poultry farm :

1. Housing: It is important you make proper housing for ur birds before they ever arrive. You need two of these housing which will be serving different purposes ie brooding and growing houses but where u don't have the means to do this u can improvise or condition the house u already have for brooding time.

2. Drinkers/Feeders: the container where you put water for the chickens is called DRINKER while the one for the feeds is called FEEDER. You must have seen these things. If u don't have money to get them u can always improvise.

3. Heat source: this can be ur kerosene stove, charcoal stove, uv light bulbs etc. It is used to regulate temperature during brooding time.

4. Capital: you need money for the following:
a. Feeds - u can buy or make this if u have a good formula
b. Vaccines/Drugs: you will be administering these things to ur doc till they are 4 weeks
c. doc: don't forget u are buying the birds.
d. vitamin /additives
e. Wood shavings etc
Additional requirements are ur time, perseverance, dedication and hardwork.

These are the basic things you need while setting up a poultry farm especially when you are starting small.

If you have any questions to ask please leave it on this thread.

How to Prepare your brooding space and care for your doc:

first I want to assume that u already have a cage or a brooding space like a room etc

- if u already have the above then u must clean and sanitise the place at least 2 days before the birds arrive. So that all insecticides and chemicals used must have evaporated.

- u will need to also spread wood shavings on the floor of the room or cage. Pls don't use saw Mill. I am referring to those ones that are like dust. The reason why u shouldn't use that is because the birds can feed on them and it affect their growth eventually. Also, it doesn't collect the droppings of the birds enough. Most times the saw Mill is for free while the wood shavings is sold at a cost. Pls dnt use the big wood shavings too. Use something moderate the birds can't feed on but can still feel comfortable matching and sleeping on.

- the morning to the arrival of ur birds, u seal up the room or cage as the case may be and put ur charcoal stoves. Ur charcoal stove however must be raised and the sides covered with blocks to avoid the birds flying or crawling in to the fire. Ur birds will be able to fly from 2-3 days. The fire will make the room warm and then u can bring out ur birds one by one from the Cartoon and drop them in the cage house. Make sure water and feed are already placed for the birds. It is also advisable to put an extra light in the room so the birds can be able to see more since their vision is poor at this stage.

- the water u put for them should have vitamins and drugs in it.

- pls don't go far away from the birds. At this time they need intensive care. So u will have to check on them like 5 - 10min just after u put them in the cage.

- observe how they are fearing.
- If they gather around the fire source, it means that the fire isn't enough for them and u need to increase heat. This usually happens during the cold weather

-If they are far apart and sparsely dispersed it means that the fire is too much and u have to ventilate the room. Usually in weather conditions such as we have now u may not even need a heat source.

-If u find them lying down and breathing heavily then ventilate the room

-if u find them playing and feeding then the temperature is ok for them and u only need to check then may be hourly.

- if u see them just clustered and u are sure the temperature is ok for them then u have to space the feeders and drinkers apart and use ur hands to scatter them. If u don't do this they would match on themselves and can lead to death.

- pls if u are using cage as brooding space be careful how u prepare the fire source so that d zinc or wood dnt get too hot especially if ur cage is up nd dwn type. If u place d fire under, the heat will affect the ones on top. U can use logic for this tho.

Good luck

HOW TO VACCINATE YOUR BIRDS

I will be discussing the right way to vaccinate ur birds following these simple steps:

- u have to make sure that ur birds are at least 7-10 days old before administering the first vaccine
- the first vaccine u are giving is Lasotta
- remove all water from ur birds early morning of the day. Leave them to only feed for about 2hrs. The idea is to make ur birds tasty so they quickly finish the water u will be giving them next
- mix a cowbell or pick milk sachet milk in a 2 litre drinker. Make sure the water is close to the brim
- remove the aluminium seal on the vaccine bottle. Be careful not allow air into the vaccine
- collect the already mixed water from the drinker into a syringe and transfer it into the vaccine bottle. Be careful not to allow air into the vaccine
- shake bottle to mix properly
- use ur syringe and carefully draw out the mixture in the vaccine bottle into the drinker
- stir whole mixture and divide into different drinkers so that it be easy for birds to drink
- put d vaccine water for birds to drink
- remove vaccine water and replace with clean water after an hour
- follow the same steps to administer Gomboro vaccine after 9- 10 days from the last vaccine
- repeat the same procedures twice each. This means that your birds take 2 shots of lasotta and 2 shots of Gomboro within 4 weeks period.

If you have questions pls ask.

Today I will be explaining the various types of feeds broilers feed on. There are mainly 4 types of feeds for broilers namely.,

a. Pre-starter: this is given to doc till they are 7 days old. It protein content, enzymes and nutritional values are usually very high and of utmost quality. It helps the chick gain all the necessary nutrients that helps it withstand stress and diseases when grown.

b. Starter: this is given to the birds from 7 days to 3 weeks more. Also have high protein content.

c. Grower: this is fed to the birds from when they are 4 weeks to their 8 weeks. This feed has less protein content

D. Finisher: this is fed to the birds from their 8 weeks to their 12th weeks. It has a little higher carbohydrates content than the rest with appreciable amount of protein.

All the 3 types of feeds comes in 2 texture
- pelleted : they are more refined. Vita feeds is an example.

- mashed : example is the type produced by Livestock, Hybrid, etc

You can make ur feeds following the right steps with the understanding of how to ratio the nutritional content /supplements.

You can also feed ur chicks logically without following the sequence above and u will still gt optimum results.

If u have questions pls ask.

Make your own poultry Feeds

Every poultry farmer knows that the major expenses on the farm is on feeds and with the constant increase in the cost of feeds, the poultry farming business suffers especially in the aspect of profiting. Imagine doing all the hard work only to come out with pie nuts profits in the end. Certainly this is unbearable and every farmer would do anything within his reach to learn alternative ways to survive in the business.
Here are the advantages of making your own feeds :

- you have absolute control of the nutritional content, quality and quantity ur chickens get
- you are better manager of the cost of production
- it is cheaper and ur birds grows heathier and faster with reasonable weight within 5 weeks
- u can sell off early for those into broilers and turn over almost 4 times within 6 months. This means more profit for u the farmer
- you can sell ur own branded feeds

All the above plus many more is possible only when you know exactly how to mix all the necessary ingredients so that ur feed becomes quality and nutriteous to ur birds.
Both the layers and broilers farmers face the same challenge of supplying their birds with the right nutrition.
A bag of 25kg feed today sells for almost N4200 depending on ur location and if u are running a big farm u know how much expenses that would result in just few days feeding ur chickens.

WHAT if there's a way to cut down this expenses by 30% wouldn't that be reasonable?

WHAT if u can produce your own feeds at even more cheaper rate (N2940) and harvest both chickens and eggs faster wouldn't that be fantastic?

Well there's. I can see u smiling already.

We've have been using a proven formula in our farms for almost a year now and it has been wonderful.
Using this formula, we have grown from 200 birds to 700 birds just last year. We plan on growing 2500 birds by this yr ending.

Imagine doing this too. Imagine selling your own brand feeds. Just imagine it

We have decided to reveal this secrets to only 100 persons.
The first 50 persons will get access to our WhatsApp group where we can properly coach u on how to make ur own feeds. Plus answer all your questions and guide u.

Considering that the crude protein content of growers produced in this country is quite low( about 15%),is it still advisable to give growers

Idealy it is not. All companies will always want to make profit their feeds may not always contain all the necessary ingredients in their expected amount. Growers suppose to contain at least 20% CP and not 15

It is better makin ur own feeds. This way u in charge of every amount of ingredients ur birds feed on
