PERFECTING THE DEMOCRATIC IMPERFECTIONS OF A COUNTRY. THE ROLE OF THE PARLIAMENT
.
When a country’s history is to be re-written and its glory to rebound. When a country is on the path for perfect democracy, tremenduous growth and maturity, nature has a way of springing forth the agents of change to effect that greatness.
.
These agents are inbued with the courage, intellect and doggedness with which such a country can be revamped, cleansed and positioned to achieving her dreams. Ironically, these agents always spring forth from the Parliament.
.
In England, at a time when democracy was substituted with the “divine right of kings” with citizens beheaded for the smallest errors and opposition to the government. A time when King Charlse 1 elevated himself above every mortal and created the impression of a demi god, an opposition to him was viewed as a direct attack to God and met with long incaceration, torture, cruel treatment, the highest brutality and death, A man named Oliver Cromwell was raised when change was to be effected in England.
.
The courage of this one man, his ability to say enough is enough to the almighty king, his resolve to stand on the path of truth and fundamental principles of democracy changed the history of England and the country went on to build the highest empire known to mankind on the threshold of democracy and the rule of law.
.
King Charles 1 on the fated day went to the English parliarment to arrest five parliamentarians opposed to his autocratic rule, amongst them was an intellectual collosus known as Oliver Cromwell, the other four fled. He chose to wait for the King and to face him down once and for all. He took his seat in Parliament and told the House that it was time that “the King and his Majesty be told the bitter truth”. He said, “I shall not take flight like a coward, a scallywag, a pickpocket or a petty thief but I shall take my seat here and tell his Royal Majesty the King precisely how I feel”.
.
As the King entered Parliament and ordered the arrest of the five M.P’s he noticed that all had fled apart from the defiant Cromwell. As he ordered his arrest, Cromwell got up and proclaimed that by that single order and act the King was risking civil war. He then proceeded to lecture the King about the power of Parliament and he moved a motion that it was rather the King that ought to be arrested for treason against Parliament and the good people of England.
.
The House erupted in applause. They shouted in a great uproar and they supported Cromwell’s motion for the arrest of the King.
.
The King was shocked with disbelief. He left Parliament badly humiliated: for the first time in his life and in the life of the English monarchy he had been challenged, faced down and humiliated by one of his own subjects in the open glare of Parliament.
.
Thereafter came civil war and the defeat and ultimate beheading of King Charles 1st, the first King to be executed in the history of England.
.
What died with him was the concept and philosophy of the “divine right of Kings” and from that point Parliament became supreme and England became a democracy. Cromwell headed the Round-head Army during the civil war and after the war he was appointed Lord Protector of England and he ruled for many years
.
He rededicated the nation to God and in his years the fortunes of England became manifold. Cromwell transformed England into one of the greatest powers on earth and he established the foundation of what was to later become the British Empire, one of the greatest empires ever known to humanity.
.
The spirit of Oliver Cromwel rests on our senators today, they are fearless, professional in the act of law making and courageous in their oversight functions.
.
They have revamped our democracy and set our nation on the path of virile democracy and executive accountability. For the first time in the history of Nigeria, we have a senate that insists on strict application of due process and the rule of law. It is “nay” when it should be “nay” and “aye” when it should be “aye” without giving a hoot on whose ox is gored..The deciding factor is always meritocracy in appointments and viability in policies. All in the interest of the common man.
.
It was Thomas Jefferson who thought that a strict adherence to parallel seperation of powers without incidental use of an organ to check another organ would breed absolute powers and arbitrariness. Why has the ignorant citizens decided to badmouth, cast aspersions, vilify and viciously attack our senate for safeguarding our democracy and bringing the executive to account through their arduous oversight function?
.
Do we now prefer a senate that is an apron string or the rubber stamp of the executive? a senate that agrees to everything without weighing it on a scale of rational standard? Unison has never being a good concept nor a contributory factor to a robust democracy.
.
As citizens, we have been weakened, broken and starved. We are continously being polarised to serve the selfish and avaricious ends of the few who has consiquently siezed our oxygen of life to cow us, to intimidate and to place us continously at their feet.
.
We have been isolated from our truth and misinformed due to history apathy. Our youths do not read and we continue to be doomed by same consequences that plagued our progenitors at the time immemorial.
.
We know how the Nigerian senate has always been from 1999. They have always served at the mercy of the executive, the president install the President and Speaker of his choice to ensure loyalty and to hold the destiny of many millions to ransome and finally, to always have his way notwithstanding how irrational and self-serving his policies are.
.
Have we not learnt from the 3rd term saga under the Obasanjo administration? did it not take Oliver Cromwell(Sen. Ken Nnnamani) to stop him?
.
We have an executive divided upon itself and a president who is healthily incapable of discharging his duities and yet we join forces with the cabals who stylishly pressured a sick man back so as to wield the powers of presidency. Now that he is back and incapable, An inhouse fighting has ensued between these shameless cabals in their quest to share the spoils of their exploit.
.
The presidency is being hijacked, two sister agencies of the Federal Government are at loggerheads. Just this week, #1.3billion naira suit against former governor Suswam was stalled simply because their is lack cohesion and unity of purpose at the centre. DSS refused to bring him to court for EFCC to try him. The personal strife between Daura and Magu has been shamelessly brought to bear in the president’s leading agenda of fighting corruption. How can such a government that has lost its bearing, sail Nigerians through our numerous problems.
.
Buhari has lost control of his head, his appointees, the presidency and the government. We are at the mercy of some unknown Asorock evil spirits who has rebranded themselves as cabals with the main intention of looting our treasury and leading our country to abyss
.
The senate has come to our rescue to hold this cabals to account, to ensure that our commonwealth is accounted for, to ensure transparency. That is the fight today and the senate cannot and should not entertain any of its members who for monetary gains and political gimmicks, is determined to pinch tents with these cabals to disparage, villainize and consequently smear and convict the senate before the court of public opinion and media speculations.
.
Hence, Ali Ndume was suspended.
.
Let me use this opportunity to beg on behalf of his constituents. A state and constituency ridden with the highest terrorist attack known to our nation. These people need their voice most at this period to count in the rejuvenation of their dilapidated state. This is not just a punishment to Ndume, who i never liked and his paymasters but a total eclipse of the voice of the people of his constituency which is sacrosanct in a representative government like ours. Their voice must be heard.
.
Let the senate tamper justice with mercy. I trust that Saraki and Ekweremadu would do the needful.
.
The wind of change can be felt by even the dead. Democracy has once again found solace in our dear nation. The maturity of power play and the strong dissenting voice of our legislature has resurrected our lost hope in finding a perfect democracy.
.
The judicuary is miserably and irredeemably in the dark. We need them to keep the pace to achieve a complete democracy which our founding fathers earnestly desired for our nation. They have continued to serve as subsidiaries. No perfect democracy holds with a dependent and weak judiciary or the lording of another organ of government by one organ.
.
Slowly and steadily, we shall reach the apogee.
.
God Bless The Federal Republic Of Nigeria
.
