Monarch returns govt’s car gift in protest of demotion - Contender drags Oni to court over kingship tussle
Stephen Gbadamosi, Ado-Ekiti
Thursday, December 24, 2009
The traditional ruler of Ire-Ekiti, Oba Victor Adeleke Bobade, on Wednesday, on the instruction of his subjects, returned a Toyota Corolla car given to him by the state as a Grade B monarch in Ekiti State.

http://odili.net/news/source/2009/dec/24/605.html

According to a letter from the palace of the monarch, dated December 23, 2009 which was entitled “Re: Demand for Restoration to Grade A and Return of Official Car,” Oba Bobade said his people were nursing a sense of historical injustice over the decision of the Adeniyi Adebayo-led administration to demote him from a Grade A Oba to a Grade B.

The monarch claimed that he was among the first 18 leading traditional leaders in the state who were permanently put on Grade A hierarchy.

But the state government insisted that the people of Ire-Ekiti had no case as the downgrading was not done by the Segun Oni-led government and that it was actually a matter for the state council of Obas and not the state government.

Oba Bobade posited that he had to return the car to the office of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Chieftaincy Affairs after consulting with his chiefs and the entire people of the town.

Meanwhile, as the kingship tussle in Odo Ayedun-Ekiti in Ikole Local Government Area of Ekiti State lingers, one of the parties to theissue, Prince Adekunle Adeniyi, has approached an Ikole-Ekiti high court, seeking a perpetual injunction to stop his alleged invalidation by the state government.

He said the warrant chiefs in the town had performed the selection process which he claimed produced him as the Oba-elect.

Adeniyi of the Serungunle ruling house asked the court to give an order compelling Governor Oni to approve his nomination, claiming that it was valid and followed due process, as well as customs and tradition of the town “as contained in the 1994 declaration.”

But the Special Adviser to Governor Oni on Chieftaincy Affairs, Princess Jolaade Onipede, said though she had not been served with any court notice, nobody had been selected, appointed or chosen by either the warrant chiefs or the community for the throne.

She said the self-acclaimed Oba-elect was never selected, elected or appointed by anyone, adding that the community had a controversial and inconclusive selection, “so, how come somebody is now claiming to be elected to the vacant stool?”

You must have read this upside down, the Oba in this article was refusing a hand out as you call it because he was demoted by Adebayo administration from Grade A to B.

And what does demoting have to do with rejection of car gift. I suggest you read the article downside up to realise he rejected it because he expected a better gift which was given to Grade A Obas

Let me pour out my mind here.

Why on earth are they distributing cars?

the Governors should focus on using these monies to develop our states.

Dont you think that this is one of the ways they strategically walk they ways into these Obas and Ezes.

look at our Roads, school, employment, power and others.

What are their plans towards ensuring that life is worth living for a common man.

Now,they have started presenting Budget and passing them, another pipeline of syphoning monies.

Please, lets continue to pray and hope for better future.

Yes, there needs to be some greater goal for keeping these Obas. As for this one, I respect the fact that he wrote a letter asking to be restored to Grade A, as he could have used force, or he could have been very stubborn, but instead he humbled himself, and he returned the car, which I have to respect, why accept gifts from those you are unhappy with?

Anyone stating he should have kept the car is probably thinking about the here and now, how will the Oba be able to make his case if he was driving around in the 'pacifier' or 'bribe' ??
Re: Oba Rejects Car Gift From Government by 0hsisi: 1:20am On Dec 26, 2009
are people reading the post before responding?
The man wanted to be upgraded to a class A Oba and only returned the car in protest.
He wanted something bigger

Here I am applauding him not knowing that he rejected the gift out of personal wont. I thought he rejected the gift because he was protesting the ills in our government and how they are treating his subjects.

What is his function in Nigeria's society so that he can be recognized right. Good civilian rejects car gift from the government ,     Oba might be his name.

These lazy, greedy and prideful citizens should do the right thing and go for election or stay out like others hustling to make their daily bread. If you are concerned of your community, complain to your local government chairman's office and vote him out next time or sue him, so that when there's an investigation they can be easier with the option of accountability points knowing parameter to point the finger not pointing as porous as it is now. It is much easier and much simpler for customer's service/ national intrest or anything similar than to have local govt chairman then oba/eze/chief/sultan/watever. These people should be demoted by majority of nigerians because every nigerian is a chief, eze, oba, sultan or anything of your choice. If their stories of being the watever they call themselves is lost then they shouldn't be there, if their stories when investigated has many k_legs(fishy) eg your papapapapa help oyibo wey been dey sell ppl, then we don't need to continue oyibo's gift for you because of the  return favor oyibo did for your papapapa;

They can always be 1 day in a year where we call it something eg chiefs day or watever. That way, all kinds of traditions is on display and is national while it is not independence day. My thing is, all these titles should be boldly disregarded for as I know their legitimacy are very troubling and as diverse as nigeria is, there should be lesser ethnic reminders. Fairness from the grassroot to the top should be nigeria's track record. It also involves issues like this traditional rulers stuff. If you tell them to live as back in the day people they couldn't.  Naija will be a great nation, with bokoharms' i don't know.

The traditional institution is the biggest obstacle to 9ja been a sovereign republic. When will we wake up to the fact that Nigerians are no longer serfs of the Obi of Onitsha, Oba of Benin, Ooni of Ife, Emir of Kano nor Sultan of Sokoto? Imagine the 'oba' saying his subjects! Such Bull! Nigeria is held captive and hostage by this retrogressive forces and you wonder why Nigerians are a 'conquered' people? The politicians themselves lack liberty as they go seeking recognition& endorsement from this ancient demonic thrones [especially those gunning for the presidency] and call it building bridges across different tribes. Who are they fooling? Are not this 'custodians culture and tradition' the ones who have sold us down the river to the military and politicians? We heard about this simply because the so called 'oba' rejected his car gift? What about the other gifts he and his ilk have been have been collecting over the years? Gifts bought &given by money that was never accounted for? You then wonder if John Kuffour during his recent visit to 9ja wasn't spot on in his utterance that our culture (darn that word again) was a fertile bed for corruption. undecided undecided  undecided  undecided

You want your cultural heritage to be done away with? In the name of civilization. That's not a wise suggestions any way. The Obas, Eze e.t.c has been in the helm of affairs before civilizations and they were not corrupt like this present day government. Was is not the civilization that brought corruption? In the olden days, no ruler dear steal what belongs to the people. Such, will see the wrath of the God of the land. Let us go back to the era where people swear with Ogun, Amadioah, Sango e.t.c before taking the mantle of office. Corruption will reduce.

Re: Oba Rejects Car Gift From Government by Mekana(m): 3:50pm On Jan 01, 2010
The system should be made to work better. Discarding the entire Traditional (monarchical) institution would amounts to a travesty. This is one of our few remaining credible heritage, not destroyed by imperialism and neo-colonialism. Even the British understood the need for that, hence their preservation of theirs after their Paliamentary Revolution, which ensured Parliamentry soverignty. Nevertheless, these Monarchs should be able to sustain themselves and state resources should not be used in maintaining them. An Oba given a car should be gracious enough to accept it because he's not entitled to it legally, albeit illegally.
Re: Oba Rejects Car Gift From Government by Bishopking: 4:23pm On Jan 01, 2010
The tradition of having Obas is no longer an important one.

Obaship, ezeship, ooniship or whatever should be a ceremonial thing if recognized at all.

Most indolent, low-intelligent, greedy and evil people are calling themselves Obas.

Indolent because they will not work! They have hands, legs, heads and everything needed to work with, still they wont contribute to any national development efforts!! angry

Low-intelligent because they seek solutions where any right thinking person know that there is no solution! Take for example, during the recent spate of arm robbery attacks on banks across the country, some obas resulted to doing sacrifice (including using humans) hoping to wade off the evil spirits 'that brought' the robbers! Some of them even shut the main markets in their town for some days in order to carry out some sinister activities in the name of sacrifice to wade off the so called robbery-bringing robbers from their domain! grin, Human sacrifice was alleged to have been conducted!! How dumb could some people be!!

Greedy because they always want everything to be theirs. Imagine an Oba having the most beautiful women as wives, the best houses, all the land!! angry, refering to people who are better than him in all ramification as his subjects begging all over the world for money, and resorting to outright stealing in many cases. Incidences have been recorded where the obas and their family members were involved in arm robbery cases. Yet no trial because they enjoy some form of unconstitutional immunity.

Evil because they are promoting human sacrifice, laziness, not encouraging creativity, anti-progressive, and because they impose themselves on people.

Whenever an oba die (especially the so-called grade A ones), many people will be sacrificed for them, Many recent incidences to validate this points can be referred to. Akure is a fresh one in many people's minds. Innocent people were kidnapped on the street, in public transport, even in their compunds for ritual purposes. One can ony imagine what would happen when the like of Ooni finally kicks the bucket cry

Are we going to allow this to continue forever? Must we wait until it happens to someone we love? in the words of the highly quoted Pastor Martin Niemoller:

First they came for the Jews
and I did not speak out - because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for the communists
and I did not speak out - because I was not a communist.

Then they came for the trade unionists
and I did not speak out - because I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for me -
and by then there was no one left to speak out for me.

Speak out now!!
