Vice-President Goodluck Jonathan has ordered Nigeria’s security agencies to investigate the alleged plot by a 23-year-old Nigerian student, Mr. Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab.

The Nigerian student of the University College, London, reportedly detonated an explosive device strapped to his right leg as a Northwest/Delta Airlines flight from Amsterdam to Detroit was landing at the Detroit Metropolitan Airport.

This caused a pop and small fire but AbdulMutallab was subdued by fellow passengers, who used a fire extinguisher and water to quench the fire.

Minister of Information, Prof. Dora Akunyili, said in a statement that the vice-president had ordered an investigation, according to Reuters.

“As a nation, we abhor all forms of terrorism. The vice-president , has directed Nigerian security agencies to commence full investigation of the incident… while steps are being taken to verify the identity of the alleged suspect and his motives, our security agencies will cooperate fully with the American authorities in the ongoing investigations,” the statement said.

Officials of the Feral Aviation Authority of Nigeria and the Nigerian Ports Authority met on Saturday to discuss the incident, Reuters reports.

”All the necessary security measures are in place in Nigeria. Any passenger, including crew members, on any flight is subject to the same security screening,” a FAAN spokesman said.

Meanwhile, Britain has ordered its airports to tighten security checks on flights bound for the United States.

A spokesperson for airports operator, BAA, said on Saturday that the Department of Transport had issued a notice to all British airport operators.

”Passengers travelling to the United States should expect their airline to carry out additional security checks prior to boarding,” BAA said in a statement, adding that passengers should leave more time to check in.

The guy took a KLM flight from Lagos to Amsterdam, changed flights and headed for America- so, it is not Nigerian security system that should be blamed, blame the Amsterdamn system which can not detect whatever foul stuff he had on him.

when you have a connecting flight, you dont go through security for a second time. only when you FIRST enter an airport from the OUTSIDE do you go through security. once you are in the airport (flight to flight) there is no security check unless other passengers/flight crew make a complaint about something suspicious. if he flew out of nigeria (sounds like it from the news coverage) the fault of improper screening lays SOLEY on the the airport he used to fly out of the country (nigeria)

Did he take a flight from Nigeria or London? I know the Nigerian Federal Aviation Authority is stepping up security, but there is still a lot of information missing.

The news is that he left Nigeria to Amsterdamn and took a connecting flight from Amsterdam to Detroit - and i commented that the blame for security lapse shouldnt be blamed on the Nigerian security system because he would have been screened in Amsterdam prior to boarding the Detroit flight, then someone said for connecting flights, you dont get screened, which i countered by giving an example of flight from Lagos - Amsterdamn and connecting to London, you get frisked from amsterdam whatever flight you are boarding out of the airport, you are x rayed and all manner of things - all metals and liquids taken from you- so - whats are you arguing?

I have been flying internationally for nearly 30 years. I have had connecting flights throughout the US and Canada as well as Paris, Beijing, Rio, London, Oslo, Madrid, Moscow and Frankfurt to name a few. Never, I repeat never has there ever been a secondary screenings within any airport. If you switch airports in the city then there is a second screening process. If Amsterdam does a secondary screening within then they are an exception.

Not only in Amsterdamn - anywhere in Europe- if you are connecting on another flight - your butt hole is screened like never b4.

I am a frequent traveler. If you are transiting through any European countries, you will be re-screened including your luggages, before moving to another flight. Started since after 9/11
