Instagram vs snapchat vs real life
Instagram and Snapchat are two social media giants which mainly cater to the young population, that is those who are under 25. There has been a lot of debate going on regarding who will be the eventual winner, which particularly strengthened after Instagram pretty much copied Snapchat’s defining feature which was that of stories and disappearing photos and videos.
We will see what each platform is and what they offer to brands in terms of marketing potential.
Functionality
Instagram basically started off as a photo and video sharing app where people simply loved to create photo albums. Snapchat’s defining feature is, however, its stories which disappear after 24 hours so it really is a fun app where people don’t worry about over posting and feel very comfortable sharing just about any moment, from creepy selfies to silly videos. So, Snapchat’s essence is in capturing the moment and Snapchat vs Instagram could very well be labelled as immediacy vs perfection too. However, with the addition of stories and live streaming, the game has pretty much changed and the lines of division have blurred.
Comparing numbers
Snapchat had 150 million daily active users at the end of 2016. There are almost 10 billion daily video views and users are logged onto Snapchat for an average of 30 minutes every day.
There are now up to 600 million users on Instagram; 400 million monthly active users and about 300 million log into the app daily. With such a huge number of people logging in daily, Instagram is a heaven for brands for promotional purposes. In a day, 80 plus million photos are shared and there are about 5 billion likes. Since 75% of the user base is outside of the US, Instagram has a wide global reach too.
There’s not much difference in the user base. Both cater to a young population; the users are college students or those just out of college. 90 and 86 percent of Instagram and Snapchat users respectively are under the age of 35. Only 14% of Snapchat's audience does not fall in the millennial category.
Now let’s compare the pros and cons of each app!
Lenses and Geo filters
This feature is something no other social media network offers and is what makes Snapchat so much fun to use. From the highly popular doggy filter to the new voice changers, seems like every user has a favourite filter to use which makes Snapchat appear so personalized. The geo filters also take the personalization experience to a next level which users simply love. You can add time, temperature and all sorts of crazy stickers too. Instagram’s coolest feature ought to be boomerang where videos, once captured, play backward and forward then backward and forward which will catch followers attention like anything!
Reach
Instagram is clearly the winner here. Instagram has a much larger number of daily active users which makes it easy for brands to buy real instagram followers

For users not too comfortable with putting everything out there and for everyone to see, Snapchat is where they should be! You’re partying like crazy and don’t want everyone to see what you’re up to then welcome to Snapchat as you can send the photo or video to only your least judgemental friends. Even if you’re putting it up as a story, there’s a good chance that Snapchat has only your closer friends added.
Non-millennial friendly
Okay so we know for a fact that we are very less likely to ever find a non-millennial on Snapchat; they are hardly ever there. Snapchat is 99% tailored to under 25. Instagram is much more user-friendly so its user base is more widespread.
Snapchat/Instagram vs real life
The struggle is real! Social media has changed our lives in not one but multiple ways. It has changed our morning routine, our evening and night routine, the way we communicate, the way we do our shopping- brands are always looking forward to buy Instagram followers to promote products, the way we spend our free time and even the way we spend time with our friends and family.
The younger generation finds itself addicted to the screens. We are looking at the screen even when we are not communicating with others people. In the US, people spend a lot of time on their phones, perhaps a staggering 4.7 hours, according to Digital Trends. On average, a person checks social media almost 17 times a day, which is a lot!
A negative consequence of posting too much on social media is that it makes us too much conscious of ourselves. For anyone on social media, the real life is not as perfect as it is portrayed online. We post pictures of everything perfect; that special vacation, an exotic looking dessert that we had or an expensive restaurant we wore to a lavish party. This has a huge psychological impact on our real lives; it leads us to a competition with our friends where we just want to appear to be leading a more interesting life on social media. For some people, this can also lead to depression and loneliness as we don’t just feel good enough.
Some studies have identified a correlation between using social media in general and dissatisfaction with one’s life; envy and self-pity are the most common associations. There is always the illusion around us that someone is doing better, going to better places, in a better relationship, a better job or simply having more fun.
There are some tips which are very useful in helping to avoid checking our social media accounts too often and in controlling the urge to share every detail of our lives with our friends.
Picture now, post later. Yes, we do have an urge to immediately share the moment with our friends, but what we can try is that after capturing the perfect picture we can post it at a later time and stay engaged with the moment.
Post with a purpose. If you’re going to stop what you’re doing to post on social media—and take time away from your experience to do so—make sure it’s with good reason.
No phone zone. You should designate certain areas where phones are not allowed at all. These should be moments where attention is especially needed like dinner, speeches, exercise and in meetings.
Find alternatives. Many of us look to our phones for entertainment. Instead, find alternatives to engage yourself. Try other things to pass time instead, like reading books, listening to music, learning to cook. The list is endless!
