The House of Representatives have called on President Muhammadu Buhari to release the remaining ₦15b budgeted in 2016 for the Niger-delta amnesty programme.

The house made the call at plenary while adopting a motion moved by the minority leader, Leo Ogor.

Mr Ogor stressed the need to provide all necessary funds to sustain the amnesty programme which has brought relative peace to the Niger-delta region.

The lawmaker said that the non-release of the 2016 budget for the amnesty programme has left over one hundred graduates stranded in the United States of America, Malaysia, United Kingdom and South Africa waiting for their October 2016 to January 2017 allowances to allow them settle their bills and return back to the country.

Contributing to the debate, member representing Andoni, Opobo, Nkoro federal constituency of Rivers state, Awaji-Inombek Abiante said the federal government should ensure that the peace in the Niger-Delta be sustained.

“Anything that should be done to sustain the peace in the Niger-delta should be done, and should be done now.”

He stated.

The house then mandated its committe on Niger-delta to investigate the circumstances leading to the development.
