AN NGO, Peace and Development Projects, on Sunday urged the Senate President, David Mark, and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dimeji Bankole, to resign their positions or take urgent steps to save the country from an impending political calamity.

The Peace and Development Project is a Nigerian NGO committed to the protection of peace through democracy, dialogue and intellectual debates.

The group, in a statement issued in Lagos by its Director, Mr. Francis Abayomi, noted that it was unfortunate that the two principal officers had not taken steps to save the country’s democracy from the dangers posed by President Umaru Yar’Adua’s continued hospitalisation in Saudi Arabia.

It said, “Nigerians now know that the President can no longer perform his presidential functions. We are all praying for his recovery. However, there is a constitutional stalemate concerning the inauguration of the Chief Justice of Nigeria.

“There is nobody to sign the 2009 supplementary budget. Besides, our nation is now missing in action in the comity of civilised nations, yet the National Assembly is conducting itself as if all is well. This is unacceptable.”

The group added, “As representatives of the people, we expect more than this attitude of indifference which suggests that some ambitious elements are waiting in the wings for chaos, to actualise personal motives.

“This is the time that national interest should override personal ambitions. We expect the National Assembly to take the lead in protecting the constitution.”

According to the group, Nigerians are no longer interested in the comments of some senior government officials who were more interested in hiding information about the President’s state of health.

It urged the National Assembly to work towards the smooth transfer of power to Vice-President Goodluck Jonathan.

“A medical panel should also be raised to brief the National Assembly and the nation on the state of the President’s health,” it said.
