Noted. Alas, I think dynamic website development with PHP/MYSQL is where the demand is. Who uses Java in Nigeria?
Re: Java/j2ee For Hire by abbey477(op): 8:48pm On Jan 23, 2007
PHP/MYSQL is for secondary school assignments, Nigeria needs to wake up to the reality of J2EE.
Re: Java/j2ee For Hire by Bossman(m): 10:15pm On Jan 23, 2007
The Nigerian market is obviously different. On this end, Java/J2EE (Struts, hibernate, servlets, JSP, etc.) is used for developing enterprise level web applications. Actually, I just found out in a meeting yesterday that the I will need to utilize the "spring framework" with the current app. I have already printed out a few docs that I will read on the train ride home. Even though Java/J2EE may not be used that much in Nigeria at the moment, It will probably catch up as major corporations start to build "real" scalable webapps.

Scalability is the paradox in software engineering. Nigeria has to wake up. The rest of the world can not all be wrong?
Re: Java/j2ee For Hire by Seun(mod): 10:26pm On Jan 23, 2007
PHP/MYSQL solutions can be designed to be scalable. Much of Yahoo.com runs on PHP, and it scales.
The first version of Friendster was built with Java, and upgraded to a more scalable PHP/MySQL version.

seun: PHP/MYSQL soluions can be designed to be scalable.

How? Can you show us any solutions or tutorial that is scalable with PHP/MYSQL? Like when you take Duke Bank Application example written in Java that is highly scalable and maintainable

abbey,

you might want to register your presence at www.webmastersofafrica.com - it is now open to app developers like yourself.

so far, many registrants have been contacted for various projects. Don't be left out grin

The Nigerian market or business owners r really unaware of the advantage of owning scalable Application written in JAVA that

will aid TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) in the long run and also CAN'T AFFORD TO MAINTAIN THE HARDWARE COST.

That is why only big private and government funded institutions like the CBN is currently enjoying the Java EE Cheque

Exchange and ERP,etc Applications developed for them by their Consultants.

PHP versus J2EE?Brothers please! Lemme enlighten y'all a little bit. Some people hear j2ee and they just summarise , is it not the average java they hear about that is difficult to implement and takes a lot of time? Why not use PHP and develop rapidly?J2EE Stands for Java 2 Enterprise Edition. When for instance you are a bank that has a branch in all 36 states of Nigeria and you want an application to do your normal online processing, the keyword is enterprise.J2EE is a development framework that has a wide range of versatile, robust technologies like Servlets,JSP's,EJB's,JSF( That isw what I'm talking about. ),XML(JAXPR,JAXR),web services, etc. Nigerians pls don't criticise what you don't know about.

I am not a programmer and may not give an intelligible answer here. However, based on the discussions, I am compelled to jump in. You are free to label my comments here as stupid (or whatever adjective u deem fit) at any time wink

PHP and JAVA can not be compared. The 2 have their place. Granted I have only one PHP website to show for it grin, I can say pretty comfortably that there are things JAVA does that PHP either can not do or doesn't do well. Scalability isn't the basis of my argument here. I am just talking in generalities.

JAVA is more mature than PHP, thus it makes sense that it has functionality, libraries, etc that PHP can only for the moment dream of.

We must all remember that PHP is at a stage where JAVA was when it was being compared to C and C++. Back then the latter tried to run the former into the ground, but its popularity only grew and now, it is hard to find any serious app that doesn't run based on one JAVA technology or the other.

PHP is getting better by the day. It's only normal and natural. Let's not distract ourselves over a trivial issue like this and think of the more pertinent ones. Like how to get more and more of us back in Naija on the train so as to reduce massive unemployment, which in the end, leads to young folks getting involved in crime.

Again, feel free to bash this post if u like tongue
Re: Java/j2ee For Hire by Bossman(m): 3:13pm On Jan 24, 2007
I just would like to mention that PHP is more of a scripting language. While Java is a full-fledged OOP language. And that is a huge difference!  They are designed for diffeent purposes. So, each will have advantages over the other in one area or another. But, for enterprise-level web applications, here in the States (and probably most other places), it's like Java/J2EE is the de facto standard.

I believe though, that eventually major corporations in Nigeria will start to use Java/J2EE when they start to develop "real" applications.

Bossman,

your comments just reminded me of something I forgot to mention up top, but which I seem to have drawn from what I hear is happening over there:

For whatever reason (and I choose to blv in the reason that PHP's infrastructure is cheaper to acquire and learn than JAVA wink), PHP has taken a strong foothold in Nigeria. When you combine that with the fact that all "webmasters" use PHP primarily and PHP is mostly identified with websites and not applications, everyone who wants something done there wants it in PHP. Same reason pretty much everyone in Nigeria wants flash on their website. They may not understand what it is or what it does, but by golly, since Okoro has it on his site, Ifeanyi wants it on his site too LOL. Finally, I still maintain that JAVA's learning curve is steeper than PHP's which is why most people are choosing the latter. I think I can speak confidently on this - I am a JSP developer and just put up my first PHP website as a side project grin

Until more and more people start coding with other languages and the general public becomes more knowledgeable, I predict PHP will reign for a long time. Again remember, typically, what Okoro wants is what Ifeanyi will ultimately want. Why? because Ifeanyi doesn't want to look ignorant in the eyes of the would-be developer LOL

I don't get it! How can you possibly be a JSP developer, but you are not a programmer -- sounds like double-speak to me.
Re: Java/j2ee For Hire by my2cents(m): 12:38pm On Jan 25, 2007
LOL rookie,

Technically, I am a programmer, but it seems that with respect to this forum, by definition, I am not. I am classified as either a "web designer" or "webmaster" (neither of which I am). So I have decided to take the title "developer" which embodies all. I figured I couldn't go wrong with that grin

I hope this helps.

Where does ASP.Net fit into all these?
Re: Java/j2ee For Hire by El(m): 11:49am On Jan 26, 2007
.NET is a framework just like J2EE and in some ways I might admit, .Net might have a better stance against J2EE than PHP. But looking at the industry, at co-operations like Oracle, one finds out that most of their solutions are JAVA - based.
