Iwa Kakeru!: Sport Climbing Girls 6/10 I came for the fan service, stayed for the plot. Not gonna lie, my primary reason for choosing to watch this show was to be choked with an insane amount of thigh scenes. But Iwa Kakeru actually tells a nice enough story, without even needing to rely on its natural reserve of fan service material. The show is about a former pro-gamer, Kasahara Konomin, who stumbles upon the sport climbing team at her school comprising of hardcore climbing elitist, Uehara Jun, friendly Sugiura Nono and charismatic captain, Yotsuba Sayo. Enamored by the sport, Konomin joins the team and resolves to work hard to help them achieve their goal of winning the Nationals. It's a pretty simple plot, with straightforward execution, as well. And therein lies what I found enjoyable about this show, the simplicity. Perfect snack to relax with when I didn't have the strength for the mental gymnastics of a psychological thriller or the sombreness of some deep drama. Iwa Kakeru doesn't try to spin some complicated twist or the other. It just focuses on the team and their individual and collective struggles as they work towards a common goal. Everything about the show was just compact and simple. The graphics and animation were okay. The music wasn't over the top. And the voice acting was on point. The characters were fairly relatable, even if they were a bit cliché. All in all, Iwa Kakeru is a good show that plays it safe, perhaps a bit too safe. 1 Like
