Residents of Lagos State will not be able to sink bore holes into the ground without permission from the Lagos State government.

The residents will have to obtain registration permit for their boreholes on minimal charges, in an effort by the state government to minimise underground water pollution and curtail water-borne diseases.

This information was passed by the state Commissioner for the Environment, Dr. Babatunde Adejare, on Monday. He said that the government would take an inventory of all boreholes in the state to trace sources of pollution of underground water.

Adejare was speaking in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos. He noted that boreholes were windows into the aquifer.

If they provide the basic water supply thru the State water corporation, would anyone have need to drill borehole?
That's Nigeria for you, once anyone gets a new appointment, he starts looking for the law that would permit him to exploit the already impoverished citizenry.

...though I think the law is for those drilling the water for commercial use, not for domestic home use
