THISDAY checks revealed that the suspect, who is also from the same local government area with the former first lady, Hajiya Maryam Abacha, has been approaching public officers and traditional rulers, soliciting for funds in advancing what he said was the governorship aspiration of Muhammad Abacha, son of the late president.

The suspected fraudster, who also claimed to be a relation to the former first lady however ran out of luck , when he paid a similar visit to Sokoto last weekend to see Governor Aliyu Wamakko.

THISDAY learnt that the suspect did not see the governor, but was lodged at the Presidential Lodge in Sokoto for some days before the Chief Security Officer to the governor became suspicious of his intention and thus took him into police custody for interrogation.

THISDAY learnt that before his arrest, the Permanent Secretary, Protocol, gave him the sum of $5,000 , though without the consent of the governor and was later recovered by the police.

The police also recovered letterheads of the Shehu of Borno with forged introductory letters to the governors of Sokoto, Zamfara and Kano states.

However, both the Secretary of the late Shehu of Borno and the Abacha family stated that they were not aware of the activities of the suspect, when they were contacted by the police.

When Muhammed Abacha was informed of the activities of the suspect, he subsequently emailed a letter to the Sokoto state police command disowning him.

Police Public Relation Officer, ASP Muhammad Umar Dakingari, when contacted by THISDAY confirmed the arrest of the fraudster, saying the command was still investigating the matter.
