From violence in the Niger Delta which culminated in the amnesty deal to the economic crunch still biting today, the ASUU strike to the present ailment of our President, the death of the king of pop Micheal Jackson to the death of Chief Gani Fawehinmi, for me 2009 can only be described by one word - Blitz, which is German for lightning or very fast. January seems like so many months ago but surely it was only 12. The human brain is only able to store so much in our quick access memory, and as such the events of Christmas day would surely be very much vivid in our memories of this year. These events remind us constantly of the dangerous world we live in, where ideas and ideologies basically shape the young minds today. As we all express outrage at his actions, one thing should stick to our minds though, there is just a bit a Umar Farouk in all of us and we have to work hard to make sure we banish these demons in our lives. We should all look out for traits such as the tendency to Character Assassinate, hateful behaviour like name calling, labeling and stereotyping or even a tendency to view opponents and critics to be evil, we have to keep alive the possibility that we may not be totally right in terms of our ideologies and the ways in which we have decided to steer our lives and as such learn to tolerate others by giving them room to live their lives with strong emphasis made on the live and let live rule. So Keep the smile, Leave the tear, Think of joy, Forget the fear, Hold the laugh, Leave the pain, Never hold back the joy ! Happy New Year! Chris. |
