VARSITY COUNCIL SUSPENDS VICE CHANCELLOR

The Governing Council of the Federal University Dutsin-Ma in Katsina State vide a letter by its Pro Chancellor and Chairman of Governing Council Dr. Marilyn Zayya Rafindadi, had on Thursday 13th April, 2017 suspended its Vice Chancellor Prof. Haruna Abdu Kaita for a period of six months; bothering on gross financial misconduct, willful violation of the procurement policy of the federal government, abuse of due process in award of contracts and the illegal sack of hundreds of staff including some in the much-sought-after professorial cadre.
Prof. Haruna Abdu Kaita has been very notorious since he assumed duty as Vice Chancellor in February 2016, taking important decisions without due approval from the University's Governing Council. His main hubris remained the sack of several hundreds of staff of the University in September 2016, a decision the Governing Council seems poised to distance itself from.
The University has since been struggling to survive since he took over a year ago; for instance, seeking to transfer the entire students of the Department of Food Science and Technology to another University as a result of the sack of the entire Faculty (both academic and technical) of the Department. The same fate affects Department of Forestry. The past one year had indeed been a rocky one full of controversies, scandals and retrogressive developments for the suspended Vice Chancellor and erstwhile chief executive, who is already being investigated for financial corruption (bothering misappropriation of TETFund grants for overseas training of some academics) and administrative brigandage by the ICPC and other Courts of competent jurisdiction (The University already has many cases against it before the National Industrial Court of Nigeria).
There are too many issues to cite and all of them clearly portray the Vice Chancellor of committing series of nefarious activities bothering on criminal breach of trust, corrupt enrichment, nepotism, forgery, abuse of power and disregard for due process in all matters including award of contracts; revealed a credible source within the University revealed.
His greatest undoing is the slip of 20 places to occupy the 34th position from a 14th position achieved in 2014 and 2015 Webometric Ranking of Universities. It remained to be seen how the University will completely deteriorate into oblivion, then came this latest action by the University Governing Council.
With Prof. Haruna Abdu Kaita's suspension, the University's Governing Council might be on the way to address all loopholes already created by his inexperience, naiveté, and evident brigandage. It is therefore expected that the University's Governing Council might also be on course to possibly reposition the Federal University Dutsin-Ma, once again, towards the path of growth and development.
