Shaolin kung fu has always been known for promoting extraordinary skills and abilities through its punishing traditional exercises.

These exercises are significantly different than modern athletic training, and most martial arts outside of the Shaolin tradition have nothing in their systems like the Shaolin exercises.

Stretching.



Flexibility is extremely important in Shaolin kung fu, because many of the advanced kung fu sets cannot be performed without it.

From the beginning of training, the Shaolin system builds flexibility through the use of stretchingexercises, many of which would seem extreme and even dangerous by Western standards.

Students are forced into deep stances that are sometimes very painful, and the instructor uses his body weight to push the student even further into the split or stretch.

These exercises are often described as being tortuous by former Shaolin students, but they are the foundation of the unusual skills displayed by the Shaolin monks.

Drive a nail into a plank of wood, then remove it with three fingers.

A student will practice this for months.

If one can remove the nail easily with the thumb, forefinger, and middle finger, then one can progress to removing the nail with the thumb,ring, and pinky finger.

Immeasurable strength from even the weakest appendages is a true axiom of Shaolin training.

Every finger on both hands must be trained to produce large bursts of strength as well as matching muscular endurance.

Over time, the nails are driven deeper into the wood.

When this becomes easy, the wood is dampened before the nails are inserted, and they are allowed torust.

An advanced student in this technique would train by removing rusted nails driven in to the hilt with two fingers, or perhaps one.

The fingers of the student must possess the strength to depress the wood itself to successfully remove the nail.

Upon mastery, the fingers will be strengthened enough to take on more difficult techniques, such as the Diamond Finger.

Foot Kicking.


If someone has ever told you to “go and kick rocks or tree,” it probably was not in a pleasant way.

That exact activity, however, is step one to this Shaolin discipline.

Anyone who has, accidentally or otherwise, lost the inertia battle to a heavy object knows the toe-shattering pain it can cause.

Zu she gong belongs to the hard force of yang, and students will begin training this technique by kicking small rocks like soccer balls in bare feet.

The purpose of this mastery is to develop the strength and resilience of one’s foot, until kicking a pillow would feel the same as kicking a boulder.

In combat, it is said in Shaolin texts that one will be able to kick an opponent as far as the stones one trains with.

Such a hardened, developed kick to the lower portion of the body immediately shatters the opponent’s balance. A kick such as this to the head could easily be deadly.

It usually from kicking a banana tree till you break it.

As Shaolin monks believe the strength comes only from the mind, there are almost no limits to what can be done with their bodies during the trainings.

The monks at the Shaolin temple in China are required to run up and down the ancient stone stairways of the temple on all fours every morning.

This isonly one of many traditional strength and conditioning exercises.

The monks are also expected to do more familiar exercises such as situps and knuckle pushups.

In addition, they spend several hours of each day practicing the ancient sets or drill sequences of Shaolin kung fu.

Although these sets contain the fighting techniques of the Shaolin arts, they also contribute to the excellent physical condition of the monks.

Shaolin spear balance.


In this photo, a Shaolin monk is balanced on row of spears, with afew other monks below him.

This very difficult feat would normally skewer someone completely, but in this case, it doesn’t.

We might wonder why, but we read that many kung fu practitioners train for years to strengthen and optimize certain parts of their body so that they can withstand tremendous force and pressure.

Imagine if I could just get half of those skills, imagine wetin I go take the eyes of all these overzealous LASTMA/VIO/FRSC/POLICE see for road. Even Army sef. Yes nah, nor be only agidi those ones sabi, if I balance finish ontop their head, ol' boy na to kick them like shaolin soccer.
