Hierarchy Of Kings In Yoruba Land: The Top 5 by ThisTrend(f): 3:13pm On Apr 26, 2017
The news that the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu disrespected the Ooni of Ife is one that will shock anyone familiar with the hierarchy of Yoruba kings in Yoruba land.

Although the ranking of Kings or Obas in Yoruba land has been a controversial subject, many agree that the Ooni of Ife is one of the most powerful rulers.

The snubbing of Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi by the Oba of Lagos is therefore a serious breach of the respect normally accorded the crown.

To answer the question, the Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, revealed the top 5 paramount rulers in Yoruba land.

1. Ooni of Ife
The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi is the most powerful king in Yorubaland.

The Alake says the Oni is the first of the five principal Obas in Yorubaland just like the Sultan is the highest ruler in northern Nigeria

2. Alaafin of Oyo
The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III ranks second among the Obas in Yorubaland. The Oyo Dynasty dates back to the Old Oyo empire which recognises Alaafin as emperor.

3. Oba of Benin
While some say that the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II is the highest as he heads the Eweka dynasty of the great Benin Kingdom and that the Yoruba people descended from Benin.

However, the Alake ranks the Oba of Benin as third. Also, the title of Oba, used to mean king was first created by Oba Eweka 1, Benin's first Oba who ascended in 1180.

4. Alake of Egbaland
The Alake of Egbaland, Adedotun AremuGbadebo III is ranked as the fourth paramount ruler in Yoruba land. He is the ruler of Egbaland in Ogun State. Egba consists of Egba Alake, Owu Kingdom, Oke-Ana and Gbagura.

5. Awujale of Ijebuland
The Awujale of Ijebuland, Sikiru Kayode Adetona is the least of the five principal Obas in Yorubaland. Ijebu kingdom dates back to pre-colonial period of 15th century.

Nice one cool...but I wonder why Oba of Lagos acted that way...even if he has beef with Enitan personally, he should have respected his kingship in the public and respond to his gesture. cool

May thunder fire anyone who counts the Oba of Benin as a yoruba king. Go and memorize your yoruba history, since it seems so hard for you people to understand it.

The Council of Chief and Obas will decide that.

Please be sensible. The Oba of Benin is in a class of his own and cannot be classified among over hyped yoruba chiefs called Oba.

History has it that Oduduwa was a Benin prince and the progenitor of the yoruba race hence yorubas descended from Benin and not the other way round.so why should the oba of Benin be classified as a king under yorubas??
This "superiority by force" mentality should be addressed and has got to stop in order not to distort history.Na wa o undecided

It is high time you stop saying this nonsense!!! There is no number 1 king in Yoruba land. Before the British came, Yoruba were never known as one. So when did all these ranking start? Ijeshas were known as ijesha and they had their own ruler. so with ijebu, ekiti, oyo. There is no number 1 king in yoruba land. Every king in Yoruba is number 1.
Not to forget. you guys have to stop calling the oba of Benin Yoruba. The Benin people language and culture is different from ours.

Alake? Is the Alake among the Obas that received a crown from Oduduwa?

And if we are ranking 'Kings in Yorubaland', what is Oba of Benin doing there? Is Benin in Yorubaland?

During the colonial time Amapetu of Mahinland in Ondo state was ranked ahead of Oba of Benin. He earned more salary than Oba of Benin. The salary of Oba of Benin was equivalent to Asogbon of Mahin kingdom. See Ilaje Intellingence report by Curwen 1937. The first Oba of Benin was raised in the palace of Olugbo of Ugbo in Ondo state. Olugbo predated Oduduwa in Ile Ife. Alafin of Oyo Kingdom was the number one Oba in Yorubaland and the permanent Chairman of council of Obas and Amapetu was the Secretary. Amapetu moved the motion for the rotation of the the Chairmanship. Awujale of Ijebuland was ahead of Alake of Egbaland. It was during the Egbe Omo Oduduwa that Awolowo accorded Ooni of Ife the number on rank in Yorubaland.

Oba of Benin is the last child of Oduduwa Adimula. That is Oranmiyan who took over the palace and then returned to Ile-Ife, then to establish Oyo. So he’s Yoruba race and Oba Benin remain the Yoruba linage and will remain.

Odùduwà doesn’t have any linage with Ogiso. Ekhanadehan was the son of the Ogiso Owodo , he banned and sent exile from the palace with his mother by the Ogiso, he wondered in the forest with his mother and where they settled to set Uwhoto, which is part of Delta Urhobo today. So Oduduwa doesn’t relate with Edo or Ogiso itself. And Oduduwa is a title chosen as an Oba, his real name is Adimula.

You didn’t even ask him how many are they in Edo that established Yoruba. Their king used to be Ogiso, which history has that they were being sent from Ile-Ife then.

Yoruba took over the throne of Ogiso, the last son of Ooni Oduduwa Adimula, Oranmiyan took over the palace and when left he installed his son, Eweka. Benin is also Yoruba name, ile Ibinu, corrupted to Ibini and Benin by the Portuguese. Yoruba race is the dynasty of Oba in Benin just in Benin Republic too.
