Labour day is holiday dedicated for workers all over the globe. It is a day to celebrate the labour of labour in all parts, sectors and work-fields of the entire world.
Here in Nigeria, labour day celebration was first done in kano state dated may,1st,1980 and it became National holiday in 1981.
There was/is poor labourers welfare in both public and private sectors.which is the major reason why labour day is being mark for celebration of labourers and creating a medium for labourers to pray their employees for a standard welfare.
Nigeria is rated among the twenty Nations with high negligence and poor welfare of labourers.
The eighteen thousand Naira minimum wage is among the lowest minimum wage worldwide with high demands.
A civil servant is being expected to feed, pay tax, transport, pay bills(electricity bills for darkness, water bills, medical bills) among other needs with Just N18,000.while the politicians received the highest salaries and allowances-more than developed counties like US,UK,China etc.
In some nations, labourers are being paid best on their working hours but here,in Nigeria,A labourer work for twelve stressful hours Just to earn a peanut "money"that cannot meet up with demands.
Labourers, even after the stress from the over time/workloads being imposed on them with poor welfare, the fruits of their labour is being delayed or denied by employees.both public and private sectors have being worsening the terrible situation of the poor labourers by failing to pay salaries for the already-rendered services.some have refused to pay workers for months and even years while others illegally sack labourers due to inability to meet-up with demands of the labourers.
These among other Issues have being the major reason why criminal and immoral activities is rampant in our Nation today because"when the income from criminality and immorality is greater than the income from legitimate source, the rate of crime will surely rise" Many graduates and skillful individuals who cannot bear the burdens of legitimate works alternate it with illegal and illicit work to meet their demands.
