My humble opinion,u are young,just finished nysc,my bro there is no job anywhere unless u have Grace and godfather.
My advise is if u have d fund and support,get a certification,and for those who think MSc is just a paper,sorry.
Nigeria is moving,we are certification-dependent.I found out after nysc,when I waka tire,nobody tell me.The job I get sef for Lagos,person wey no dey work better pass me.
Hence,I had 2 run back for MSC after I lost a well-paying job cos no MSc.I am presently rounding-off mine at the Premier Univ and am hopeful.A time will come in this country where Bsc will be equivalent to FSLC.
Get sth doing,if job no dey get certification esp if ur course is tilted towards ICT or Management,or if u have the resources,forget your thoughts and what other will say,go get an MSc.
People talk about scholarship,its cool,is it fully funded?No,do u have d resources to complete ur programme there abi u want to look up to the Nigerian Govt?ask others who are there.
Perhaps,go through TOEFL,its not always on the cheap,there are good schools that u can get an MSc in max of 2years.

Between,2:2 graduates are eligible to apply in the ongoing NDDC Scholarship(Lots of 2:2 graduates are beneficiaries of this scholarship).There is also another scholarship spearheaded by some African Countries(I have forgotten the name),you can make your research.Cheers

This graduate OP is one of the sensible graduate in this era.

No certificate can replace or take the place of work experience. Go get work experience either in a pay job or no-pay job/internship first before any additional qualification/ certificate.

@Op,acquiring a Masters Degree is not a waste of time,you might not get the benefit now but someday in the future an opportunity will present itself and one of the requirements might be "candidate must be a Masters Degree holder".

As regard scholarship,there are some scholarships that are fully funded(Eg. Chinese Government Scholarship,Taiwan Government Scholarship,I think Korean Government Scholarship etc,just make your research).

We have PTDF Scholarship,DAAD Scholarship,MasterCard Scholarship,NDDC(which is open presently)and lots of others you can find online.
Not forgetting Federal Scholarship Board/BEA Scholarship.

pls stop listing all these scholarship like as if its easy to get them... One of their requirements is that u must have an admission in the school the person wants to study.. Dat means the person must have already paid school fees.. Now tell me.. Where is d money?

@OP. i respect your decision and I was once like you.. I have soo much experience under my belt and already have grey hairs trying to get a promotion or a better job. I have seen fresh graduates who traveled to the UK for a masters and had as little as 8 months experience.. when they come in, they get hired, get better pay and better position way above mine with all my experience.

A piece of advise.. get as much experience as you can as quickly and as broad as possible.. get a Masters and professional (Internationally accredited/recognized) certifications while at it. give yourself at least 2-3 years to achieve this. Most professional companies won't ask you for more than 3-yrs experience.. whether you like it or not.. the Experience you gain this year becomes slightly less relevant in the next because business is dynamic and innovation is making experience less important. Become an Expert at Tomorrow not a Professional at Today

You don't need a first class, 70 percent of your GPA is enough and besides all those bogus requirements are just put there to scare people away. Each application is judged solely on an individual basis. It's not as if you are applying to harvard or MIT there are other good schools which arent as competitive.

Take it from me....M.Sc in dis country is a no no for me. After my days as an undergraduate having monitored M.Sc programs in my school which is a replica of itself in other higher institutions in dis country, I made d conscious deliberate decision 2 never bother myself about furthering my education in here...If can't do it in a much developed country were I ll truly add value 2 myself n not just certificate...den I may as well remain a B.sc holder for life n rather go for professional certification. Education system in Nigeria is cancerous, a waste of time, money and productive age.

I only read a day to my papers...sh*** educational system in Nigeria... After spending ur time and money in school we are back in labour market fighting for 20-100k job that is if u get ni o that we all know say na sales or teaching job..does that make sense... i won't discourage u if u want to do masters ooo but think twice don't invest all ur money in one basket where there are tons of ways to double ur savings....as for me I cannot put over 200k on masters unless I have 30 billion for the account ooo

As a fresh graduate who just finished serving, there are 3 options available for you to choose from: get a job (mostly teaching jobs); go for your masters; or remain jobless (job search). If you get a job quickly, then you are lucky but if you are jobless then you are like most Nigerian graduates.

Because of lack of job, there is always this pressure to further your education- you don't want to remain home jobless and also some there is a myth that an MSc Cert is an added advantage (don't know if that is true sha).

To be honest, most of us wish to further our studies, and even become a Doctor, but the circumstances in Nigeria are jeopardising our dreams. I personally have decided that I won't go for my masters now because of the under listed factors:

1. Certificates are overrated:
it is now very obvious now that it is not by the number of certificates you garner that determines your success in life. We have seen drop-outs and people without formal education that are more wealthy and successful than scholars. People are making it now by learning new skills that will benefit the society.

2. Finance:
Unless you are from a rich home, it will be difficult for you to finance your masters. You need like 25k to buy only the form, you will pay tuition, buy books, get accommodation and so many other expenses. I know people that started but couldn't finish because of finance. People believe that at this stage you should be able to cater for yourself so you are on your own (OYO)

3. Age:
Most companies now recruits only graduates that are 26 years old and below despite the average graduating age from Nigerian Tertiary Institutions 24-26. So going for masters will add to your age and probably you will come back older which will limit the job offers you get.

4. MSc doesn't guarantee a Job:
They do say it is an added advantage but it is pathetic to me that even after the Msc you will still come back to send resumes, cover letters and also battle with some wicked dragnet aptitude tests. If it is sure that after my masters I will be offered a job then to enrol won't be a problem.

5. Frustration:
Nigerian educational system can be really frustrating; irregular academic calender; lack of infrastructures; some lecturers are not nice. e.t.c all these can discourage someone planning to go back.

I'm currently doing my master after serving last year. The advice I'll give you is that it depends on the course you want to do. If you are interested in a course which is difficult and demands lots of time and concentration like the one I'm doing you are better off doing it now. Because as get older you get less time and focuse become more distracted by life matters more. If its a course that is not so intensive i don't think you'll problem with doing it latter.

But knowing how nigerian recruiters are and the fact that everybody has undergrads degree nowadays it is wiser to just have that master degree at your side just in case.

But i agree with you most a times postgrad degree are not worth it in the sense that you won't need it to do most jobs (it will not enhance your ability to do most jobs more than an undergrad)

Go for professional courses, its shorter, you learn faster and best you can defend your knowledge even apply it to your lifee. Go for nebosh or others related. Its more ground. If you do nebosh you can do masters wen u get a job.

In Nigeria these days, neither masters in Nigeria nor abroad (insert here all the big schools and big courses you can think) can guarantee job in Nigeria. I have quite a number of coursemates who did their masters in best schools in UK that are either still job hunting in Nigeria, or teaching, or doing their PhD's.
So I studied all of them all my friends who did their master's abroad or in Nigeria. I come realise that more education (specialisation) doesn't necessary guarantee success in the job market, especially in Nigeria.
But this might help anyone succeed in life.

1. Network/Connect. During one's masters in Nigeria or abroad, don't overstudy, the best graduating student doesn't get the job these days. Seek out to build healthy relationship with your schoolmates especially those who are or related to politicians, wealthy men and company owners, even your lecturers or those whose minds are in starting up their company.
2. What I learned from The Social Network movie, was from statement the VC made. He said "Harvard student I told that creating a job is better than looking one". Start small, think global. Learn as much as you can that'll make you succeed not just only your course work. Talent is overrated.
3. Always do number 1.

It is not about furthering or getting a skill. If u live in a very useless nation like Nigeria u re limited in what u can achieve.
When u go for Masters most firms we tell u we cant pay u. Even if u get a job how sure are u it will last as most companies are laying off workers or for those not laid off they ve their pay slashed. Most companies are closing up. The few involved in production do most of their production in neigbhouring African countries with stable power eg Unilever
U learn a skill to be self employed u dont get much patronage as most people who wud ve been ur prospective clients due to low purchasing power are poor and may not be able to pay or may owe u and govt with multiple tax, no infrastructure wud kill ur business or if not dead wud be in coma due to high cost of operation.
Until the root of d problem is addressed which is corruption anything u do may end up like the motion of a barber chair movement without going anywhere

Ok, here is my story, i just completed my NYSC on the 7th of April, prior to that I had obtained my MSc form in UI in the same department. That means I had paid for form and acceptance fee. On getting to Ibadan, I went for classes last week, after which I started asking some questions.
1. After MSc, what next
2. Can I combine my course work with hustle (business etc).....don't think so
Hence, I felt let me answer these questions now and not postpone it to the next 2 years when I will be almost 28. The truth is, I realized the essence of education is application, more than certification. With my ICT skills and my training in Solar installations, I decided to face my hustle, knowing fully well that I will never be the same in the next 2 years, with God's blessings. As a man rightly said on the day of our POP, if you want a career job, start looking for it. If you want to be an entrepreneur, start acquiring the skills, and if you want to be in the academics, go for your MSc and PhD.
Always remember, the man of means will always employ the man of knowledge. Choose wisely and follow your damn guts...Its all in the power of FOCUS.As a matter of fact, I should be in class now cracking out numerical integration, but here I am designing a PV system for a new client!!!

When you add together the time, postgraduate project, rent, stationeries, pocket money, stress and tuition fee for the almost 2 years to do M.Sc...

Minimum of 1 milla if you are in the sciences...

To do M.Vph or MVSc in my case is even more.

Well, graduated last year. I don't think of doing Masters program yet. I make 400k+ a month via the Google Adsense program. for me it's a decent pay and there's really no need for extra stress, not right now. honestly, doing NYSC this year will be a big step back.
