Statistics published in some national dailies about two weeks ago revealed that Nigeria is out of recession. Most citizens frowned at the gestures, suggesting it was a mere propaganda geared to praise the Buhari-led administration, but others feel otherwise. The debate didn’t heat that much. It was hovered by the whistle-blowing announcement and all that ensued it and the following week, the president announced that he would be working from home- another headline that basked the recession debate.

A scan through some markets like-commodity, spare parts, Agro, retail, services etc. reveal that most prices are still on the high, while others have increased. For example, a broiler feed (top finisher) which was N3800 in February is now N4050 and this is same for most commodities in market. Their price continue to go up, and this made most Nigerians to wonder why the government would lie to its people; at least, there has been some level of trust in the government.

“Food security is still another looming issue, the Agric sector has not received the proper boosting it needs to provide the people’s continuous demand for food to stay alive. We all need something in our stomach to fight this recession, if at all we are still in recession. But then again, if Nigeria is not in recession, why hasn’t been an improvement in the collapsed standard of living? Why hasn’t there been an improvement in some struggling sectors of our economy? The mining sector has not been properly improved and we can barely see its impact on cement. The agro sector is another issue. We keep hearing about government measures and accomplishments in this sector, yet it doesn’t reflect on the market prices, let alone production and output. Or is there an imaginary force that hijacks government’s effort along the line? We must become spiritually concerned and observant.”

As concerned citizens, we shall remain hopeful as the government continues to roll out its programmes to curb the economic holocaust eluding us for a while now, irrespective of where and how the president works.
