Barcelona star Lionel Messi has turned down the initial offer for the renewal of his contract at the Catalan giants, reports AS.

The Argentina star, who recently saw his ban with Argentina lifted by FIFA, is understood to have rejected an offer worth around €30m - €35m per season.

Messi's current deal expires in June 2018, and talks between the club and the 29-year-old's father and agent, Jorge, have been ongoing for months.

Despite the initial rejection, negotiations are still very much alive, and it is expected that the two parties will reach an agreement in the coming weeks.

Messi has spent his entire career with Barcelona, scoring an astonishing 502 goals in 579 appearances to establish himself as perhaps their greatest ever player and one of the finest in the history of the game as a whole.
