As part of activities marking his second year anniversary in office, Governor Udom Emmanuel yesterday May 22, 2017, commissioned the Akwa Ibom State Toothpick and Pencil Factory with accompanying Allied Products.

On assumption of office, Governor Udom had outlined the 5-point agenda of his administration, top of which is the Industrialization drive.

In fulfillment of this Industrialization drive, Gov Udom has taken a massive stride in resuscitating failed industries in the state as well as establishing new ones in partnership with private investment.

The government powered program AKEES is the coordinating agency responsible for the running of the Toothpick and Pencil Factory. The factory has already been running with products sold to users all over the country.

Activities for the second anniversary continues with commissioning of more completed projects and flag off of new ones.

Why should governments especially Nigerian governments run factories? It is not done anywhere. There is nothing that the government has managed that is efficient. None so far. Trust me, when he leaves office, the factory will be producing below capacity.

For jobs to be created, the business environment must be conducive. Government does not create jobs, their responsibility is to create the environment for jobs to be created (by private individuals).

*At least 18 hours of electricity.
*Adequate security.
*Low taxes (businesses less than 5 years should not be taxed).
*An industrial hub that has every amenity to ensure efficiency during production (in the so-called Itam Industrial Area, nothing is running at all).

What I have listed is not rocket science. If a country like Singapore can do it, I wonder why Nigeria cannot.

On the flip side, it "sounds" good especially after a minister said we will begin producing pencils by 2030.
