2016 was a mournful year for lots of fans all over the world. Over 20 celebrities died that year.

Renowned icons like Prince, David Bowie and a handful of other celebrities have departed this world. 2016 was filled with so much tragedy and death, we’re not sure we can handle much more the rest of the year! Let’s take a look at some of the influential and prominent individuals that we have lost so far this year.

25. Anton Yelchin

Actor Anton Yelchin died following a car accident aged 27. The Russian-born Star Trek star was found by friends on June 19 at his home in San Fernando Valley. His death comes a month before the release of the third film in the sci-fi franchise, Star Trek Beyond.

24. Muhammad Ali

The former heavyweight champion of the world, Muhammad Ali, died at the age of 74.
Having suffered for 35 years with Parkinson’s disease, the three-time former world champion passed away after being taken to hospital with respiratory issues.

23. Nick Menza

The most recent passing occurred just last week. Former drummer of the thrash metal band Megadeth, Nick Menza passed away on the 21st of May. Doctors say the musician had a “massive heart attack” while performing with his current band, OHM at the Baked Potato in Los Angeles.

His former bandmates were shocked to hear the news of Menza’s death. Menza played on Megadeth’s first four albums. Megadeth founder Dave Mustaine tweeted to his followers, “TELL ME THIS ISN’T TRUE! I woke up at 4 AM to hear Nick Menza passed away on 5/21 playing his drums w/ Ohm at the Baked Potato #nickmenzarip.”

22. Harriet Carell

Actor and star of the hit series The Office, Steve Carell lost his mother on May 7th of this year. The actor announced the news to his fans via Twitter, saying “Love you, mom.”

Harriet had four children including Steve, and six grandchildren. Steve had made a special acknowledgment to his parents during an interview with The Guardian in 2013. “My parents … are very down to earth, kind, smart, generous people. They both grew up during the Great Depression and had a true sense of value: for possessions, for family, for each other.”

21. Afeni Shakur

Mother of the infamous slain rapper Tupac, Afeni Shakur died suddenly of a heart attack on May 2. Deputies from her town in California showed up to Ms. Shakur’s house after getting a report of the cardiac arrest.

20. Michelle McNamara

You may not recognize this name right away, but you will probably recognize her husband, Patton Oswalt. Oswalt is an actor and comedian and has played roles in movies like Zoolander, Taxi, Failure to Launch, Balls of Fury and 22 Jump Street. He also had a recurring role in the series The King of Queens, Two and a Half Men, and Justified.

19. Prince

The world was truly shaken up when news that legendary musician, actor, and icon Prince died suddenly at his Paisley Park Compound in Minneapolis. Prince was just 57 years old. It was recently revealed that the cause of death was an opioid overdose.

It was also reported that he had a medical emergency one week prior and had to make an emergency landing in his jet. At the time, his reps told reporters and media that he had the flu.

18. Chyna

One day prior to Prince’s death, WWF legend Chyna was found dead in her apartment in California. Stories of her death were quickly overshadowed by thousands of articles and reports regarding Prince’s shocking death.


Chyna was only 45 years old at the time of her death. The exact cause has not been revealed, but Police pronounced her dead at the scene. Authorities don’t suspect any sign of foul play. Legal prescription bottles were found but nothing alarming, and there was no suicide note left at the scene.
