The mass movement from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Akwa Ibom State on Thursday spread to Ward Four in Ibiono Ibom, one of the largest and most populous local government areas in the state, as Elder Awak Akrah, Governor Udom Emmanuel’s campaign coordinator in the ward in the 2015 election, led over 200 members of the party into the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Ward Four is the home ward of the House of Assembly Member for Ibiono Ibom, Barr. Ime Okon, and the PDP State Publicity Secretary, Barr. Ini Ememobong.

Receiving the defectors at the APC ward office in Awat Nkan, the party’s State Secretary, Dr. Effiong Etuk, who is also from the ward, said despite the presence of Okon, Ememobong and two special assistants to the Governor, the APC would sweep the elections ahead in the ward.

He assured the defectors of equal rights in the APC and charged them to join hands in ensuring the party’s victory.

A former Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Engr. Ignatius Edet, an indigene of Ibiono Ibom Ward 6, who attended the event in solidarity, regretted selling the Governor to the people of Ibiono Ibom three years ago as a commissioner and champion of the Akwa Ibom Consolidation Alliance (ACA), Udom’s campaign structure, saying that he had come to the realization that the Governor did not mean well for Ibiono Ibom people.

He stated that the PDP was dead and the Governor stood no chance of winning a second term.

The ex-Speaker urged some Ibiono Ibom politicians still in PDP not to waste their time any longer in the party, adding that “the earlier, they leave, the better for them.”

A stakeholder in the ward and former Director of Protocol to former Governor Victor Attah, Akparawa Okon Imerh said it was important for the ward to join the APC winning train moving fast through Ibiono Ibom and the state and called on party members to rally round their son, the APC State Secretary, whom he described as a very major player in the affairs of the party at the state level.

A veteran politician from the ward, Elder Anthony Monday Akrah, regretted that the PDP, which he brought to Ibiono Ibom as a whole in 1998, was later hijacked by fraudsters but expressed happiness that the remnants of the party were currently present in only two of the 25 villages in his ward.

A former PDP State Administrative Secretary, Mr. Innocent Asanga, lamented that the PDP, which he served at its secretariat for eight years, was now a shadow of itself because it had deviated from the ideals of its founding fathers.

Another stakeholder from the ward, Barr. Edet Ikotidem, likened the exodus from the PDP to the exodus of the Israelites from Egypt and declared that the final collapse of PDP in the state was just beginning.

A former councillor, Miss Idara Udofia, said APC members were out for an all-round winning of the ward and advised the defectors to fully imbibe the change agenda of the party and do away with the antics of PDP.

Speaking on behalf of the defectors, Elder Awak Akrah, Ward Four ACA coordinator and former Ibiono Ibom local government supervisor, said he and his supporters were motivated to join the APC by the former Speaker whom he described as a straightforward and formidable politician.

Others who spoke at the event were the APC Ibiono Ibom chapter chairman, Mr. Bassey David Umoh, Ward Four chairman, Mr. Godwin George Akpan, ward youth leader, Mr. Effiong Ufia nd Engr. Kufre Ekong Inyang, a stakeholder.
